DS is on 4 bottles and 3 solids a day and for the last couple of weeks I have tried to introduce a trainer cup. I have tried with both water and well diluted baby juice - neither he's bothered with. I have then tried with a bottle to see if he'll at least get the thirst for a drink after meals but he just gums that as well and then pushes it away!!

I guess he just doesn't seem thirsty, or that he thinks it's milk, but by then he's already had his milk and solids so not interested for any more!! I have tried at various times throughtout the day also and he may take 1 sip from the bottle then push it away!!

Should I be concerned yet that he's not drinking any fluids other than his milk or not really worry just yet and keep offering?? (I appreciate I haven't been trying for long but not sure how old they need to be taking extra fluids??) Hope that makes sense and thank you for reading!!  :) ;)

Hi!

Honestly, unless it is excessively hot AND your LO isn't taking in a good amount of milk (formula or breastmilk) you shouldn't have to worry about any extra fluids until he is older.

He is even on the younger side for food and he's already taking in 3 meals so he is likely getting any nutrients and fluids he needs.

So long as he is gaining weight and producing urine (lots of wet diapers for you to change) he is doing fine!!!

Many moms don't even offer water or juice at all until later. There is no need.

Hope this helps :)

I totally agree with Nicole!!  You can keep offering it so he can practice with the cup but he really has no need for it at this point since he's still getting a lot of milk.  I personally would stay away from juice for a long time to come, anyhow.

Hope that helps! ;D

Ditto on the advice from the others!

I would actually totally stay away from juice. My 4 yr old only drinks milk or water, gets juice for special times like bday parties. Our ped dentist told us to stay away from juice as it's so high in sugar and causes cavities. What they don't get exposed to they don't learn to love! When your lo is more ready for a sippy I would take out the stopper to let lo learn to drink from it, then put the stopper back in, this will make lo suck to get the water out. We did this for my dd and it worked.

We exposed DD to a sippy cup from about 6/7 months with water or formula in it. She didn't learn how to use it properly and take to it until she was about 10.5 months old. BUT a lot of moms find their LOs won't take a cup even past one year. So, don't stress. Like they said, you can keep exposing, but don't force it.

Agree with others.  I started a sippy cup with water at about 7 months and it took my LO to about 11 months to work it out so I do think its largely developmental.   She now loves water and drinks it readily.  Have to say I agree on the juice (dentist scared the wits out of me too!) and could count on one hand how many times DD has had juice in the last year.  Am actually glad she doesn't have a taste for it at all!

Wow...lots of replies!! :) thank you so much!! I'm glad that you all agree he is fine without any extra fluids and yes he has lots (and i mean lots!!) of wet and dirty nappies :).

Glad to hear also that a lot of your Lo's didn't take to a sippy cup until a lot later!! I'm not in a hot country - just the Uk!!! BUT.. we are going abroad in a few weeks to a hot country so should I just stick to offering water in a bottle to ensure he takes what he needs rather than fussing with a sippy. I'm just worried that he may not want to take any water when we're abroad also but he may need it??? I'm guessing he should still be ok as long as he has all of his milk feeds and solids and we'll just keep offering to him!!

I will also definately stay away from the juice ;)

Thanks so much for all of the replies :)

When you're away I would just do as you said and offer him water in a bottle. If he wants/needs it he'll take it. ;)

Which cup are you using? I used the cheapest tommee tippee flip top one with mine. It's free flowing so I once they put in in their mouth I could gently tip it and they soon realised there was something in it. If you don't put too much water in it it's not too heavy and they both learned to use it pretty quickly.

Of course they also quickly realised you can wave them around and drip water everywhere, you can blow into it and the water shoots up out of the cup and you can then open your mouth and let the water just fall out. ::) ;D

hahaha lol!! Thanks Laura :)

I have a tommee tippee one also but it is non-spill and for the exact reason you state, someone did recommend the other day not to get non-spill as they then have to work out to suck it before they realise what's in it!! I am going to invest in one that will just pour into his mouth and have fun and games!!! He is already waving the one he has about all over the place and tipping it upside down so no doubt it's going to be messy business!!! :)

I will look out for the tommee tippee one you describe!! thank you for reminding me of that!! ;)
