Cluster Feeding?
« on: May 12, 2010, 19:40:49 pm »
Hi ladies,

My 3 week old ds2 seems to spend a huge amount of time feeding in the evenings. During the day his feeds usually last for about an hour and he feeds roughly every three hours. However once it gets to about 4 or 5pm he will start a feed that can last for around 3 hours or so (last night it was 4 hours  :o). He will feed for about an hour, like normal, and will then have a break for 10 mins or so where he is fully awake, but then he starts looking for another feed and this cycle will carry on for a long time until he finally falls asleep.

I was talking to somebody about this today and they said that he was cluster feeding and that it was completely normal. Does anybody else's lo do this? How long does this kind of cluster feeding go on for? It just happens at a really inconvenient time as it is always during ds1's dinner time/bedtime. It means that this time of day is sooo busy and stressful for me. I'm just wondering when I can expect to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Also, for the last couple of nights, ds2 has pretty much refused the breast on the feed after the cluster feeds. He wakes up hungry but when I try to get him on the breast he will latch on and suck for maybe a minute and then pull off again screaming. The night before last this went on for almost an hour before I finally gave in and gave him a bottle of expressed milk. He will then take his feed from a bottle quite happily instead. Does anybody have any idea why this might be happening?

Thanks,
Chrissie x

(((hugs))) and bumping this up for you :-*  Hopefully some other moms will jump on with some tips!

There is a big growth spurt around the 3w mark that could be throwing you both for a loop.  Has this always been going on, or a recent thing?  Have you read http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=66001.0 ?  There's also some information here http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64627.0 on dealing with those early weeks.
