Help! Tired baby wants to sleep
« on: May 12, 2010, 22:32:06 pm »
Hi, I have a 12 week old who will not nap longer than 30 mins.  I have the first two BW books, but am still at a loss.  We have been on easy from the beginning, here was our typical day:
7 wake and eat
7:20 Activity, change, floor/tummy time
8 Sleep (she can't be up for more than an hour without becoming OT) 1.5-2hrs
10 eat
10:20 Activity
11 sleep
1 eat
1:20 Activity
2 sleep
4 eat
4:20 activity
5 sleep
6 eat
6:30 sleep (unless it is bath night, then closer to 7)
11 dream feed
4 feed then right back to sleep til 7

Now she still wakes at 7, but is tired right away after eating.  She goes down for a nap but sleeps no more than 30  mins.  We have kept our routine, but it means she is awake for way too long.  She sometimes goes back to sleep after about an hour, but will scream if left in her crib (even with shh pat).  I have been trying W2S for almost a week, and even with that she still wakes up at the 30 min mark.  She used to be such a happy baby, now she is tired and cranky all the time (and quite frankly so am I!) The last two nights she has been waking between 1 and 2 and not going back down till close to 5, then waking to eat between 6 and 6:30.  I really don't know what to do anymore. My husband says to just let her cry it out, but I can't do that.  Any help could quite possibly save my sanity.

big hugs...I'm sure you are just exhausted  :-\

Looking at your routine, is your first A time 1 hour? (this is the time from eyes open to eyes closed)  And this gets you a 30 min nap?

If so, I would think about increasing her A time a little.  It is sounding to me like she might be UT (undertired) and not tired enough for a long nap.  I would also think this is the case if she was taking long naps and now all of a sudden they have shortened.  The typical amount of A time for a LO this age is 1h20-30 minutes.  You could try stretching it out by 5-10 minutes, do something very low-key to keep her up, and see if you get a long nap.  Make sense?

Hope this helps and keep us posted - hang in there!

No, the 1 hr is the time until we start bed time ritual and then it takes 20-30 mins for her to go down, so I count that towards her 1.5 awake time.  Also, today she was up from 6am til 8:30 (would not go down for anything!) and she still only slept for 30 mins.  It breaks my heart to see her so unhappy.
