2-to-1 transition - a few questions
« on: May 18, 2010, 15:22:01 pm »
Hi all

just a few questions:

how will I know when my LO is ready for one long nap?

If, say, he has one long nap (3 hrs) in the morning, does that mean he will not give me any sleepy signals in the afternoon?

And what happens to bedtime?  Does that stay at the same time or should I rely on his signals?

thanks!

It depends on his age.  At 12 months a three hour nap to me woul indicate enough daytime sleep but would need to make sure A time is sufficent on either side of it IYSWIM?

You'll know if he's ready for 1 nap when he start either cutting naps or refusing the pm nap.

If you post your EASY it'll be easier to see if you are in the 2-1 switch or just need to tweak.

What is your LOs A time at the minute and what age is he?

Hi

sorry for late reply! My LO is 9 1/2 months old and is doing a 4hr A time.

Here is out EASY:

Awake - 6:15

E -  7:30
A - till 10:15
S - 10:15
A - 12:15
E - 1pm
A - 1:30
S - 4:15
A - 5:30
bath time - 7:30
bed time - 8:15

The reason I am asking if he's ready for one long nap is that there doesnt seem to be enough hours in the day for 2 good naps (1.5+hrs) as well as the full A time of 4 hours.  He's going to bed later and later, especially if he sleeps for 2 hrs.

If I wake him up early from either nap, it means that he doesnt get his full A time and then wont sleep well at night?

He isnt refusing PM naps at the moment, I was just concerned about his ever increasing late bed time!

Hi there!  Just adding my two cents'...we had to start cutting back on one of DS's naps when it got to be too much A time + naps to fit into the day.  This is what we're currently doing (and he does ~4h A times):

Awake 7
A: 4h15
S: 11:15-12:45 (1.5h)
A: 4h (sometimes a little less to make this an UT nap)
S: (4:30) 4:45-5:15 (30 minutes)
A: 3h
Bedtime between 8-8:15

The 2-1 transition doesn't happen abruptly, so what will happen is one of two things:

1) Short AM nap/long PM nap (with a reduced A time in the middle).  This is good if your LO has started refusing to sleep after a certain time of the day.
2) Long AM nap/short PM nap (with a reduced A time at the end of the day).

So, just kind of see what your LO would like to do.  I'd start with cutting one nap back to ~45 minutes, instead of the 30...if you feel that's better.  You're just going to have to cut back on the daytime sleep somewhere, and you shouldn't go right to one long nap until A time is closer to ~5h.  As you can see, our days are between 13-13h15 long.  During the 2-1, this is fairly common; but LO's day shouldn't be longer than 13.5h.

If I wake him up early from either nap, it means that he doesnt get his full A time and then wont sleep well at night?
Not necessarily.  You just want to make sure that you shorten his A time after the shorter nap so that he doesn't get OT.

HTH a bit! :)

Thanks for the advice!!

He normally goes for a 2 hr nap in the morning so I have been cutting back his afternoon nap, usually at the 45 minute mark.  Just needed to check that was the right thing to do!

Also, just wondering, do you know what it means when LO is on his back and starts slamming his legs down on the mattress over and over again?

My DS did this yesterday (for the first time) and I wasnt sure what he was trying to tell me...

thanks!!

Hmm, it's rather hard to say.  It could mean a number of different things, and it really depends on the child and the circumstances surrounding when it happened.  Have you tried using the S.L.O.W. acronym to deduce what's behind the behavior?

Even though your LO wasn't crying the principles still apply :)
