Waking for dream feed
« on: May 23, 2010, 16:51:43 pm »
Hi there,

I'm not sure if this is covered elsewhere but I can't find the information. My son is 5.5 months old and in the last few days has started waking for his dream feed. He's never done this before!

I usually feed him around 10:30 (at the latest 11) but the last few nights he's woken at 10:40, 10:50 and just before 11 if we haven't yet fed him. He drinks his bottle and goes right back to sleep for the night but I'm wondering why he's started to wake. I feel like if we get in by 10:30, we can do an actual dream feed and all is good but on the few nights we haven't made it in by 10:30, he's woken up crying.

We haven't started any solid foods yet. He's showing a few signs but nothing major and he really doesn't seem hungry after his bottles and goes 4 hours in between no problem.

His EASY schedule is:

7am - wake up and drink 6.5 oz
7:15am-8:30/9am - activity
8:30/9am-11am - naps (wakes at least once or twice during nap - NOT a good napper yet!)
11am - wake up and drink 6.5 oz
11:15am-1pm - activity
1pm-3pm - naps (same as before - not a good napper!)
3pm - wake up and drink 6.5 oz
3pm-7pm - activity and usually 1 short cat nap but has gone without (although very cranky if he dosen't have a cat nap!)
6:30pm - bath, bedtime routine
7pm - drink 6.5 oz and goes right to sleep
10:30/11pm - dream feed 6.5 oz (when he doesn't wake for this dream feed, he's been asleep from 7pm and then right through till 6/7am)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'll post about his naps in the nap area as that's a whole other story (and has been almost since day 1 - so that's nothing new!).

Thanks,
Jenny

6am wake up days
Me again! I also wanted to post about 6am wake up days. Most days my son will sleep till 6:30/7am but every now and again he gets in a pattern and wakes up at 6am for a few days in a row. I'm not sure if wake to sleep would do anything for this or not. But my main question is if I get him up at 6am and go through the 4 hour EASY day, do I really put him to bed at 6pm??!?!

Some mornings we can push him till 7 but ignoring him or by giving him a soother but we're really trying to not use the soother in his bed at all.

Thanks!!
Jenny

In response to another post, what is HTTJ????

Here's some answers to the questions above:

what A time are you aim for?
1.5 - 2 hours tops. This morning he fell asleep by 8:40 and doesn't eat again till 11 so we'll see how long this nap goes. There was no fighting this one though so that's good!!

What does your wind down looking  like ?
With a 4-year-old running around, there's not much of a wind down. We sometimes sit and read one or two books but often the baby is alredy tired and just starts to cry (obviously over-tired then, right?!). So usually I just change his diaper, talk to him softly, turn off the lights, close the blinds and put him into his sleep sack and then walk away. It worked great this morning...he fell asleep within minutes of me walking out.

do you have any prop dummy feeding to sleep etc?
No props for sleep time. He has a soother rarely when we're out for dinner or at people's houses and only if we need it but never for sleeping at night or napping. The only time he feeds before sleep is bedtime but he doesn't always fall asleep on that bottle. If he's missed his catnap, then he's OUT by the time the bottle's done but that's only every now and again.

how do you extend naps?
sometimes i pat his back and shhhh him which tends to work after 5-10 minutes, other times i pick him up and rock him a bit. I tried the soother a few times but that wasn't working for long so we've scrapped that altogether. patting his back seems to work best when he wakes early.

Dream feed worked okay at 10:30 last night. PHEW! Will keep aiming to do by 10:30 at the latest and then I think I'm okay. I assume don't drop it unless it becomes a problem, right? And then drop it once solids are firmly in place - around 7 months or so??

Update on this morning's nap - around the 45 minute mark, he woke up and is now chatting in his crib. Do I head in if he's not crying or just wait it out and see what happens?!?!

THANK YOU so much for the insight. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks and hop on here again if we need more mommy advice! Thanks again!
