Just water here, too.  If we are out and I forgot to wash an apple then I do as Tom and rub it on my pants (trousers that is!!!) until it's nice and shiny, hoping to at least get rid of as much surface dirt as I can.  Grapes and berries I soak in water and swish around as much as possible.

I only wash in tap water too, but then I do in only buy organic  :P

Apparently washing in a mild solution of white vinegar is supposed to remove any nasties  ;D

This too. Things like grapes, apples, strawberries, carrots, zucchini, potates etc I only buy organic. Things like melons, bananas, pineapples and the like I don't worry about organic (have to save somewhere) but those don't really need to be washed either! The potatoes I scrub more than just rinse but that's cause they seem rather dirty otherwise and we eat the skins.

I've always read that you should still be washing anything you are cutting through - when you take a knife to a melon and chop through it the dirt, chemicals, etc get on the knife and go right through to the flesh you are eating.

Have just read an article on the numerous uses for baking soda, and apparently sprinkling some on fruit and wiping it with a cloth or sponge is an effective fruit and vegetable cleaner.

Yes I heard that recently too, but the thought of white powder residue makes me not want to bother.
The tweaking never stops!

I actually use dish soap on some produce, grapes especially since I don't like how they are sometimes sticky from one that has exploded in the bag.  I take them all off the vine and put them in the colander, then drizzle with a bit of dish soap and swirl them around.  Makes a nice big lather, then I rinse thoroughly.  DH thinks I'm crazy, but I think they taste better when they are clean :)
