Suggestions on veggies
« on: June 17, 2010, 00:23:03 am »
Madi's veggie intake has decreased lately. I was able to get green beans in her but now she wants nothing to do with them. I try different veggies and leave them on her plate but she rather toss them on the floor.  :-\

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get some veggies into toddlers.

My LO went on a veggie strike months ago.  I have resorted to making veggie patties, which is a lot of work.  Yet, it gets veggies into him every day.  I still offer veggies.  But most of the time he won't touch them.

You should read Jessica Seinfeld's book. Not bad, I did what she did. Sneak them in. It worked for us  ;D

Dylan loves vegetable soup - just plain old Campbell's vegetable soup.  I add more vegetables to it (just whatever frozen ones I have on hand), bring it to a boil, and then add some rice or couscous to make it more of a meal.  Dylan eats the whole thing!  I don't like to do it often because of the sodium content of the soup, but it's nice to split the can as lunch or supper if it's just the two of us :)

I like Jessica Seinfeld's book as well. I gave it to my sister for her Xmas I think b/c at age 26 she still doesn't eat veggies.

For LOs though, I'd still offer fresh actual veggies on their plate so they are used to seeing it as a food item, but then try to add them to other foods to get the nutrition in if they don't eat them from their plate.

You can add veggies (purreed or finely chopped/grated) to meatloaf/meatballs/patties---basically ANYTHING ground up. You can add them to smoothies. You could try adding them to yogurts or cottage cheese. You can add finely chopped veggies to rocotta cheese and use in lasagna or baked ziti. Even if YOU wouldn't think to put certain food items together, your LO probably won't notice or care about the taste combinations.

What if you made them inside baked dough, like chicken pot pies, calzones, etc. You could add them to meats and cheeses and cut them up really small. She probably wouldn't notice.

Again, I'd still offer straight up veggies everyday. Just hide a few until she starts eating them regularly herself again to get them into her.

HTH.

I want to continue offering them to her so she can get familiar with veggies and understand that it is part of a meal. I do have Seinfield's book but have yet to use it.  :-\

She is such a picky eater that I am running out of ideas.  I can try a meatloaf-she has never tried that. I am also going to try the vegetable soup.

We too do soup - we buy organic, no salt added vegetable soup and chicken noodle soup and add extra frozen carrots and peas. I plan to make a big batch of soup this weekend too. We add ground spinach to meatballs, chopped zucchini to turkey patties, put veggies in omelets (and quesadillas) and he LOVES vegetable lasagna that I make with spinach, zucchini, carrots and mushrooms.

Which campbell soup is good?
She recently has rejected rice and there is where I snuck in some veggies. The funny thing is, she used to love rice.

I make dd homemade chicken noodle soup..she's pretty happy as long as she sees pasta!  It's not that hard, I toss a skinned baked chicken breast in a pot with organic broth (low sodium), scrape chicken off the bone and dice up tiny after a while...add chopped raw potato, chopped celery, chopped red onion, a bag of frozen veggies (corn, carrots and peas), and then small shell pasta or elbow pasta. I toss some chicken bouillon in there too.  Mille is a pretty good veggie-eater, but despises meat, and this soup is one of the only ways she'll eat it!

Also...she never would eat any raw veggies until I realized how much she loves to dip.  So I got a high quality ranch dressing (organic) and give her matchstick carrots, cucumber slices and celery stalks...as long as she has some dip she will munch away!

Amelia1227 -  your soup sounds amazing...gonna make it this weekend.

The campbell soup that my dd loves is the chicken noodle soup made out of fishies...but she loves all pureed soups. That is how I get her to eat veggies in the winter. Summer seems to be a bit more challenging.

Hi,
we are having same issues. tonight i made a very simple topping and put it on a muffin and then grilled cheese on top and he liked it. topping was mushrooms, tomato, tomato puree and sweetcorn. He did not eat any scorn but did try the rest and did well....

That is good news.  I haven't tired any pureed soups yet as it is very hot here.  I do keep offering her veggies on her plate but she just picks them up and gives them back to me.   :-[ I am going to try pizza tomorrow with grated zucchini.

Kids love dips. ;D My dd loves to dip her fresh cup up fruit in pureed apple sauce or chocolate pudding. (choc pudding is just on the weekends) Veggies seem to still be a problem. That is why I have to sneak them in. Now that she is 4yrs old, she has caught on.

This past week I realised I might have to introduce vitamins because I do not feel she is eating well these days.

So off to the pharmacy I go.
