Teething taking so long!
« on: June 24, 2010, 04:59:37 am »
I have been having NWs on and off for a few weeks now, and I've been having to resort to AP to comfort DD at night. I'm really tired now :-( How am I going to know when she is no longer waking due to teeth though,  and is simply waking due to bad habits? I don't want to sleep train again if she's in pain and also I hate the thought that I've been having to medicate for so long, especially as it doesn't seem to help NWs that much!

What should I do? How long do teeth typically take to break through? I'm so so tired!!

Thanks

Leorah would take ages every tooth and I often wondered if we were making excuses but once all her teeth were in these kinds of wakings stopped so I can say yes teething can cause problems for so long  :P

Yes I do wonder if I'm making excuses! Cos she's fine during the day and stops crying the moment I pick her up at night! Did you used to medicate every night? How do you decide when to medicate? Thanks x

hmmm if she seems fine, then perhaps the worst is over and will settle down soon enough.

Just in the last 2 weeks, eg, DS would suddenly start crying, chewing on his finger till almost swollen, then i would medicate then and also at night before bed.  DF med doesn't work well here as DS would just spit it out.  When he wakes crying, I would medicate.  But he got used to waking in the night and continued for a few nights.  AND my worst AP was that for days he didn't eat well during the night, he would ask for milk and i would give him coz I thought he should be hungry.   So he kept waking for milk when his eating was back to normal, then i weaned off the night bottles which is hard work and then he started sleeping through the last 3 nights finally.  And I also gauge by how happy he is during the day.

Thats the thing! She is rarely affected by teething during the day and will always stop crying at night if I pick her up. But I can't keep in my arms all night of course! So I medicate and keep on cuddling her and finally she sleeps again. But has she slept because of meds or would she have slept anyway?  ???

I used to medicate if it was working on the advice of my doctor who said give paracetomel if it helps her sleep because sleep is important, we didn't use it in the day unless very bad before naps, I think they are more distracted from it in the day so it doesn't feel as bad. Some days we would think she can't possibly still be teething so would give the medicine a miss and she would be up all night so if the medicine works then there is obviously some pain! My dd had so much medicine that I would worry so much but since she has been finished with teething it has been very rare she has needed any and that is only when she has bad ear infections.
