When did your LO start thumb sucking?
« on: June 25, 2010, 19:17:34 pm »
Hey ladies,
Was wondering if anyone could tell me when their LO started to suck their thumb? My DD1 is a thumb sucker and used to self sooth and sleep through the night from 10ish weeks.
DS seems to love to suck his fingers and occasionally when we first brought him home he would nod of to sleep doing it, not consistantly so I gave him a paci. He had blisters up his hands and arms where he was sucking post delivery so I was pretty positive he would take to it.
Now he sucks his hands and fingers when getting tired, or after a feed and then he stops gets cranky and needs the paci, his arms flail like mad and I usually end up swaddling, or restraining them till he falls alseep.
Would love to get rid of the paci but with 3 other pre schoolers in the house it has been a god send being able to rely on it.
Any opinions would be appreciated.

My LO started at 2.5 months and still sucks her thumb now at 2.5 years.
Really don't mind, know she will stop eventually when she is ready.

DD (now 2 yo) started sucking her thumb at 6 mo (we never used any other props with her)...this also coincided with her STTN & her short naps getting longer.

I totally get what you mean about dummy being a godsend when you have more than 1 LO...I now have DS who has a dummy (tho I've never been a dummy fan...he is a really sucky baby & it has also helped loads with his reflux/ settling for naps).

I haven't weaned him off the dummy yet, but plan to soon (have been putting it off...) & like you, I've been hoping DS would start sucking his thumb/fingers to help with the weaning process (he chews his hands a lot but he's teething  ::)

I'm wondering the same thing!  My little guy is 10 weeks and has been sucking on his hands since birth.  He's starting to do it before he falls asleep.  My fingers are crossed he finds his thumb because he has been rejecting the paci making sleep time very difficult!

My 5 year old is still a thumb sucker, I guess I paci is easier to wean than a thumb :o, but I like the idea of it being attatched to the end of his arm in the middle of the night rather than me having to replug!

DD was 9 weeks when she started sucking her thumb. Started STTN every night (df-7am) at the same time

DS started sucking his fingers at 9 weeks too. He also STTN (bedtime-6.45am) from then (not every night). He's nearly 14 weeks now.

DD was around 12 weeks when she started sucking her thumb. She's almost 27 months now and still uses her thumb to soothe herself to sleep. I noticed when she was small that she was interested in her thumb, so when I swaddled her for sleep, I would put her little hand by her face. It took no time at all for her to find it, so the swaddling helped a lot!
