should I "top off" solids meal with BF?
« on: June 26, 2010, 02:55:17 am »
DD is 8.5 mo. and isn't really eating much for solids. We have a nice routine going so she sits down to "eat" 3x/day but she doesn't really get much in.  :) Here's a typical day (sort of):
A anytime between 5:30-6:30 (sigh - working on that)
E / BFsometimes 5:30 and 7:30, sometimes only 7
E / Solids - 8ish
S 9-10:20
E / BF 11
E / Solids 12/12:30
S 1:30-2:30
E/ BF 3
E/ Solids 5ish
E/ BF 6:15
S 6:30/7

We are doing BLW since she won't take purees. I'm OK with this, but wondering if her lack of solids is partly the culprit for all the NW.  I'm going to try a technique I found on another thread - to slowly decrease BF times and maybe dilute EBM over time...  In the meantime, I'm wondering if I should "top off" her "meals" with BF? I did that once today and she chugged down for several minutes - not quite as long as usual but she only ever nurses for 5 min. tops anyway...

Would appreciate any suggestions... I don't want to start any bad habits but I'd like to make sure she's eating enough during the day to see if that helps get us all a little more sleep!

thanks

*Jaci*

If she is drinking a fair amount in the night I would try to get some more into her during the day, though I'm not too sure I would  offer after each solid- that would bring you up to 7 feeds in a day! I would try to offer one extra feed- maybe when she first gets up? As for offering a bf after solids I offer a bf if ds's solids are "dry" with not much liquid, just in case he's thirsty especially if it's hot out. He's not a huge fan of the sippy with water yet but we're working on it. If the extra morning feed would not work, I would spend some extra time during her other bfing sessions trying to put her back on longer (than her 5 min) to get extra into her. Even wait 10 min and try again. I find ds drinks for 5 min or less and pulls off as though he's done (he'd rather be doing other things) so it takes longer to feed as I wait and put him back on.

Good ideas - so true about being too busy to nurse.  :D
I was giving her the sippy cup after solids and she usually drinks a good bit - well, everything seems like a "good bit" for her. he he - so I was just wondering if that was OK or if she should be nursing instead? I think she's genuinely "thirsty" then and not "hungry"... even after the little bit she eats

She's nursing 4x a day (not counting the night feed you might be trying to wean) so if she's getting enough milk at these feeds than she is fine to take water with her solid meals instead of adding more breast milk. If you are unsure about her bfing feeds (if she's taking enough) you can always offer her a little bit of breast milk in a sippy as this won't create a bfing snacking habit.

just added one bf in the late afternoon -usually a little after her "dinner" - the last 2 days (kinda of "tanking up" for the night) and that has helped - only 2 wakings which really would be a DF and one NW so I'm OK with that for now... (slept til 7 today!!!! YEAH!!!!! I woke up in a fright thinking something had happened!  ;D)
thanks for the assurance on the water - will keep up with that

That's great to hear, you're lucky dd will take the extra feed at that time and that she slept until 7!
