What should I do next?
« on: June 30, 2010, 19:57:16 pm »
Hi there,

Need help AGAIN, so thank you in advance for any replies.  DD is 15.5 months old and has been on 1 nap for about 4 weeks.  It was going quite well until the weekend just gone.  She fought her BT on Sunday from 6.30pm - MIDNIGHT!!!  She was taking a good 2.5/3hour nap in the day but the last few days is doing 1.5 hour max.  She had a NW on Monday from 10pm - Midnight.  She would not go to creche on Tuesday morning and was just clinging to me and crying.  This is not normal for her.  When she refused to sleep, I tried PU/PD and she settled fine when I pick her up but as soon as I try to put her down in her cot, she freaks out!!  I dont know if I should go back to 2 naps, extend her 'A' times or reduce them?  Any ideas would be a big help,

Many Thanks,

Siobhan

Hi there Siobhan, is it teeth?  Any other changes going on?  Holiday, visitors, DH away?

What about an ear infection?  I know a lot of times kids don't really complain at all until they are laying down to bed at night.  I think it starts hurting worse then.

Just the other day this happened to a friend of mine w/ her 7 year old son.  Even at this age, he never told her about any ear pain at all.  But, when he went to bed that night he was up complaining or crying until 4 a.m. b/c his ear was aching.  Just an idea!!!

Hi,

Sounds like what we are going through, the transition went well but a couple of days of less sleep has meant OT has set in. I have been trying to get as much sleep in her as possible while maintaining a routine as I don't want to go back to 2 sleeps.

How long was her A before her nap?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies!

Thankfully she STTN.  BT at 7pm (no problem) - I woke up at 6.30am and she was lying quietly in her cot, so I have no idea what time she woke up - guessing about 6.00am.

Hey Wendy!  Great to hear form you!! Dont think it is teeth - I cant see/feel anything coming through and she normally has bright red cheeks when teething.  The only 'different' things are a new cot for a few days (The other one broke, but is now fixed).  I didn't have a summer sleep bag for a few days either so I just put her to sleep in her p.j's.  Would this have an effect??

Not sure about ear infection either - She has a wee cough and a really runny nose for the last few days but is not pulling at her ears and goes down for a nap ok. Will bear it in mind for the future tho!! Thanks.

Her 'A' time before her nap is normally 5.5hours. I have tried putting her down earlier but I still get the 1.5 hour nap. The last time she slept for 3 hours was Saturday. If she sleeps for more than 2 hours, I usually have a 5.5hour 'A' time before bed.

My gut feeling is that she is super OT.  I doubt I would get 2 naps but I am willing to try anything.  If I give her a 20min nap in the morning, what 'A' time should I aim for before the 2nd nap?  Will there be enough time in the day for 2 naps?

Sorry for all the questions but everything was going so well before!!

Many Thanks,

Siobhan

Hi there, hmm they could be shifting in the gums, sometimes runny nose can be from that.  She could also have/be getting a cold.  Finn never pulls at his ears either when infected.  I always thought his ear infections were teething, been stung twice on that one.  Sometimes it's worth having them check the ears to be sure or if in doubt, try some painkillers to see if it helps.  Have you tried anything before her naps?

You can try 2 naps, do the 20 min nap earlier, what's the earliest you can get her down in the AM?  Then probably ~3 hours later she'll want a longer nap.  Maybe sooner if she's really OT but with her decent 11 hour nights I doubt she's that OT - it sounds like something is bugging her and she can't settle for her naps.

So one scenario might be:
Awake 6:30
Nap 10 - 10:20
Nap 1:30 - 3
Bedtime asleep by 7:30

Just throwing ideas out there :-)

Hi Wendy,

Had a 1hr 45min nap yesterday from @11.40am - 1.25pm and in bed asleep by 6.30pm.  She slept till 6.30/40am so I am very pleased.  Tried to put her down for a nap today at 12.10pm and she battled till 12.45/50pm and is still asleep (it's now 3pm).  I might wake her at 3.15pm and then BT at 8.00pm.  I'm hoping she has caught up on her sleep but I dont want her to sleep too late in the day or BT will be super late.  I did give her pain meds before bed last night so you are probably right about the teeth!!
Should I stick to 1 nap?

Thanks for all your help,

Siobhan

Hi there Siobhan, with such good nights I would be inclined to stick to 1 nap, you've started making progress there for a month now, to go backwards seems...well going backwards lol.  1 hr 45 is pretty good for one just transitioning.

I think she either battled because of the good night or she needed her nap to be earlier like the previous day.  I would probably not juggle it too much just now.  Keep in between 11:45/12 - and that means having her asleep no later than 12.

I also agree not to let her day creep out too much, a later bedtime means too long a day just now.

Hey Wendy,

Thanks for the reply,  I forgot tho tell DH to give her pain meds before bed last night so we had a couple of NW but she settled fairly quickly (and without milk!! for a change).  I think there is a tooth coming through at the moment.  i got her down for her nap at 12 noon and no battle so I think you are right about that too!!  Will stick to 1 nap as I don't want to go backwards!!!

Many thanks for all your help again!!

Cheers,

Siobhan
