2:1 – UT for long nap?
« on: August 03, 2010, 23:46:59 pm »
DS is 13 mths and we have been doing short am/long pm nap.  For the last 2 days, his long pm nap seems to be on the short side – maybe UT?

Here is his last 2 days:

MONDAY
Wake 6:10
A 6:10 – 10:20 (4h 10m) – usually aim for 4 h A, but he took a bit longer to fall asleep
S 10:30 – 10:40 (20 m)
A 10:40 – 1:50  (3h 10) - usually aim for 3 h A, but took longer to fall asleep
S 1:50 – 2:55 (1h 5m)
A 2:55 – 7:25 (4h 30m)

TUESDAY
Wake 6:20
A 6:20 – 10:20 (4h 5m)
S 10:25 – 10:45 (20 m)
A 10:45 – 2:00 (3h 15m) – talked for 15 min before he fell asleep
S 2:00 – 3:10 (1h 10m)
A 3:10 – 7:35 (4h 25m)

The past 2 days he took longer to fall asleep at nap time (usually he’s out within 5 minutes) and now his “long nap” has gotten shorter.  Sometimes it was over 2 hours, and then in the last 2 weeks, it’s been about 1.5 hours.  But now the last 2 days he seems UT.  His days are already long (between 13.5 – 14 hours), so I can’t extend his A time any more?

Should I be concerned about the UT long nap?  Could he be ready for 1 nap?

I tried 1 nap before when he was 12 months and he ended up OT, so we went back to 2 naps, which has been going well until now.  I’m scared to try it again!

I think if you don't want a really late bt it's probably worth giving the one nap a go.  You could do it for a day and then a 2 nap day and then chop and change for a bit as necessary?

Maybe start with an 11am nap and then super early bedtime if he pulls a short nap.

Honestly at that age we went thru months of 70-80 min naps and it just stunk. I tried doing 2 like you are, tried doing just one and nothing ever helped.  She did get better after 18 mths, sorry to be a downer about it :(

I tried 2 days of extending his A time from 3h to 3h 15 before his long nap.  The first day it helped, and I had to wake him after 1.5 hours.  The second day it didn't work - he napped 1h 15.

So today I attempted a 1 nap day, put him down at 11:00 am, but he only slept until 12:30.  Luckily I was able to get him to take a 20 min CN in the afternoon.  I was scared he'd refuse it.

Hmmm, not sure where to go from here.  MIL looks after DS 4 days a week and switching between 1 and 2 naps will confuse her.  So it may be easier to keep him on 2 naps when she looks after him, and I can attempt 1 nap when I'm home with him.  I can live with the shorter "long" nap as long as there is no OT or EW.

That sounds like a good plan. I'd do that.  Keep us posted.
