Jet Lag - long NW
« on: August 05, 2010, 14:56:43 pm »
So my Newly turned 1 year old (on 31st July) is jet lagged. We are working on a 7 hour time difference. The thing is I kinda know what to do, but I have to deal with the NWs. So what do i do?

First night, patting for an hour till she fell asleep.

Last night, did various things, BF (prop!), susshikng, stroking head, then finally, after 2 hours, just walked out and let her cry... it was awful but didn't know what else to do sigh.

Tonight, well i was with her an hour, and i don't know if i should stay in the room, or walk in walk out, or what.. i feel awful letting her cry, it's on and off, sometimes quiet and sometimes a wail.... DH says I should let her cry but that's not the BW way and I feel pretty awful doing it. I mean, its not her fault she's not sleepy right?

sigh. any ideas? I know in the day to limit her naps but today we accidentally let her sleep for 2 hours for first nap then 40 mins... man i hope that she gets the sleep bug soon :(

Hi there- I actually had similar problems with our LO after a hospital stay, and what worked for us was a mini dose of melatonin to stimulate sleep for 2 days. Our MD okayed it (you could call your own- as jet lag is the pits),  and said it can be helpful in situations when their sleep clock gets messed up. Melatonin can be found in most pharmacies and natural food stores in the vitamin/supplement areas. There are also homeopathic remedies to help.
I gave 1.5 mg crushed in applesauce 30 mins prior to bedtime, was able to put him right down after our usual routine, and within a few days his clock was sorted out.
Just a thought. The other thing to do, of course is to keep a check on naps, but perhaps extend her bedtime by an hour or two, until she's more tired, then each day bring it 30 mins earlier until it's back to it's normal time.
FWIW, I agree with you, she can't help it if she's not sleepy and letting her cry herself to sleep is so sad. Hugs and hang in there!
