Trapped wind after bfeeding
« on: August 06, 2010, 21:17:46 pm »
Hi all,

This is my first time here, so please excuse if this has been answered elsewhere:

My ds has been on EASY since birth and had no problems establishing bfeeding. He is now 9 weeks old and onto a 3.5 - 4 hour routine. This includes a dream feed circa 11pm, then a middle night/early morning feed about 3-4 am. My problem is this.. he is waking up every morning at about 5am screaming in pain with what is apparently trapped wind. I wind him after all feeds, and have taken to bicycling his legs, using infacol and gripe water, and rubbing his stomach in a clockwise direction, but this doesn't stop the crying 1-2 hours after the middle night feed. Symptoms are eyes shut, head moving side to side, screaming in pain...deffo not hungry or cold or wet. Burping sometimes helps, but it's usually when he eventually manages to (ahem) break wind that the crying stops. It happens every night/morning, so doesn't appear related to anything I have eaten, and usually only at this time. I could put up with it if it was any other time of day but atm it's causing a certain amount of sleep deprivation iyswim. Please help!!

Ah poor LO.
Did you use the Infacol for every feed for 1 week plus as it has a cumulative effect?
Could you perhaps prop the head of this cot with a pillow under the matress so the wind can come up while he lies there instead of going down? Also when you feed could you hold him in a position that keeps his head and chest higher than his tummy and legs so that gravity is helping the wind come up. Maybe you could also try winding midfeed as well as at the end?
How is your supply? I ask b/c I am just wondering if it is possible you have a fast letdown or oversupply which is causing him to take in air.
As LO's get older and become more active they tend to grow out of windy problems as they can help the wind come up themselves with their extra movements.
HTH.

DD is just the same - I don't know why it always strikes at silly o'clock though  :-\.

Although TBH DD busts at least 80% of her naps due to wind  :(.

If they are healthy, happy and gaining well then I think this one of those things that we just have to sit out and wait for them to grow out of it  :( :(.
