Switched to FF - Baby vomiting
« on: August 08, 2010, 04:57:02 am »
In the last couple of weeks I have been weaning my 8 wk old from BF to bottle feeding.  He does spit up a little after most feeds, and previously the occasionally projectile vomit.  But in the last week he has vomitted at least once a day.

This mainly happens in the evening, he will fuss a lot during this feed, take most of the feed, then vomit up a good portion.  He is then much more comfortable & will eat happily.  He will eat an average of 800-900 mls per day across 5 feeds.  He is approximately 14lbs (6.2kg).  I try to burp him after every 50mls or so, and he burps pretty well.

He sleeps pretty well too, although I do put him on his side (using a rolled up towels to keep him on his side).  I noticed at around 3 weeks he was very restless when he slept on his back.

My thoughts are he could have reflux, or he could be overfed?  Can reflux be aggravated by formula feeding?

He is gaining weight well.

Thanks

How much is he taking at a feed? Which bottles are you using - it may be worth trying something like Dr Brown's if you haven't already to see if that reduces air intake.

It could well be that he is refluxing, have a look here http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0 and see what you think. Formula can make reflux worse, breast milk digests more quickly so their tummies are fuller for longer with formula so more to be refluxed. The other issue is that reflux can be a symptom of milk protein intolerance (MPI) and if this is the case then ordinary formula will make things worse http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=119689.0.  If you don't think MPI is an issue then the Easy Digest formulas could be an option - not sure where you are, but in the UK they tend to be thicker than normal formula so stay down better for some babies. There are reflux formula's available too - my two have both had Enfamil AR which worked well for them with meds.

Either way, I would get him checked out by your Dr, you are obviously concerned about the vomiting.

Also bottle feeding is tough for a BF babe until they get used to it.

I do agree with Laura to look out for those things.

Is your LO fussy during their normal A times? And how are they sleeping?

When I switched my DS to bottles he was AWFUL at taking wind in. He really needed a 'anti colic' bottle and couldn't do with a normal one. I've always been amazed at how much wind they do take in when feeding. DS still has a wind after a bottle at almost 2 (thankfully he winds himself now though!!).
