How late on could I realistically introduce a bottle?
« on: August 11, 2010, 18:51:58 pm »
DD2 is ebf, I'd love to get her used to a bottle but finding time to express is just NOT happening right now!

I don't want to give her formula quite yet but I think I will only get round to giving her a bottle when/if I do introduce formula. So just wondering how late I could potentially leave it to start her on the bottle??

I think I would really like to get her to 20 weeks on just bm...What are the chances of introducing a bottle successfully that late on? Zero?!

TIA xxx

Does she take a paci? We tried really early on, however, have had problems. I think babies are more likely to take a bottle if they take a paci (my experience with my 2).

We introduced a bottle at 10mo!  It was a process, but we did it, so it's definitely possible :)

Megan is refusing at 11 weeks Charli.

DS was the same - I did get him too take a bottle at 20ish weeks but only using the unpleasant cold turkey method (not recommended unless medical issues that necessitate).

You will find LOs that take it no issue later on but TBH the later you leave it the more likely you will have issues.

If you want a painless introduction I would do it now really.

Thanks girls. Yes she does take a paci, I was wondering if that might help!
Vikki you continue to amaze me!!!!
Liz, any luck yet??

Well, as it turns out I was kind of forced into taking the decision because DD2 has been prescribed colief which needs to be mixed with milk for her to take it. She hates the syringe so I figured now was as good a time as any to try her! So I got my act together and expressed some milk yesterday morning and she took the bottle 3 times across the day ;D Granted it was only with the tiniest bit of milk in each time but I am so pleased with that, I will see how much I can express and increase the amount of milk slowly. Fingers crossed today goes as well!

tell me about it, the only way I can express is sterilise everything the night before (luckily they stay sterile for 24 hours) and then in the morning, get DD2 down for a nap in her carseat (cot just isn't happening atm!) then trap DD1 in her highchair with breakfast-and pump! But then of course there are a million other things to do then too!

Keep trying if you ever get the chance, I feel your pain :-*

If I was more organised I could try during breakfast. I need a time when J has not got bored and frustrated already.

He is a bit of a handful ATM, and needs 1 on 1 when Megan is asleep, which isn't that often as she isn't a great sleeper.

ladies have you tried involving your LO while pumping? DS love sto hold the wire or the pipe etc and see how much milk is coming (;) performance pressure here) but at leats it is not stressful to ahve him shouting for me all the time I am trying to pump.

Or I pump late in the night while watching TV
9 and 6, oh boy!

I fear Jacob would want to fiddle too much and dismantle the whole thing. He does find the milk coming interesting though!

You are right though - I could do a 9.30pm pump now before going to bed - I just didn't think of it  ::) ::).
