Starting Bottle feeding
« on: August 17, 2010, 20:55:22 pm »
I BF my first for 5months and am wondering how much formula does a NB take in one bottle and how long between feedings? 2hrs?
I have been BF for 24hours now and have decided to try formula. I gave my new lo formula today, she drank 1oz and spat up. Is this spitting up normal?
I don't remember my first spitting up with breast milk!

When we switched to formula I mixed it with EBM for the first few weeks then went onto one pure formula bottle, then two etc..   So we really slowly introduced it.  We had spit ups still, but he was growing and happy, so I didn't worry too much.  When I made those first bottles I would use like 4 oz of breast milk and 2 oz of formula, don't count the breast milk as water for the formula because it will constipate.  Good luck, hope this helps.

I remember we had to feed formula from day 2 and we started with 10ml every 3 hours adding 10ml per feed each day until u reach 100ml and keep at that and follow LO's need to take more or less.

we didn't have spitting problem, not sure if it can mean something else.  Good luck and congratulations again!! :)

I gave J bottles in the early days as he failed to latch for BFing - so I pumped and gave it back to him - or sometimes used formula if I didn't have enough BM.

He used to take mainly about 1oz, 2 at best and that was probably after a week or so.

But essentially you just bottle feed to demand at this age anyway, and it will be tiny amounts.

Spitting up is completely normal as long as they are happy - it is often due to wind taken in during a bottle feed. Make sure you stop and wind her every 0.5oz or so at this stage.
