breaks in the middle of the feed!
« on: August 18, 2010, 08:32:33 am »
Hello,
My newest LO, 2 weeks old, likes to fall asleep on the breast. But what happens when I take her off, is that she naps or immediately wakes up, and is hungry about 30 mins later again. It annoys me, since I have other two kids to tend to and this break just makes the whole bf process longer.
I've tried everything to wake her up in the middle of the feed: rubbing her hand, gently tickling her feet, talking to her, I even got my 2 1/2 yo to talk to her (not very gentle) and didn't work either.
Is this a pattern that I should stop or just go with it?

I should mention that she feeds every 3 hours.

Something else, is a 15 mins feed normal at this age? I get the feeling is not enough and still try to get her to drink more... sometimes successfully, other times not so.

I'd appreciate any comments.

Thank you!

Can you wake her up with a nappy change when she falls asleep and then see if she'll take some more? I did this with DD for at least 8 weeks, until she managed to keep awake all the way through a feed.

Hiya,
Just wanted to drop off these two links for you, thought there might be some ideas for you:

I have to say though that at this stage, if she's feeding every 3 hours, it would suggest she is taking plenty from each feed and I wouldn't worry too much.

You could also try stroking baby's cheek. Babies are born with a sucking reflex which is 'activated' by stroking the cheek. This way your little one may carry on feeding while asleep.

I only found out about it when my son was 8weeks when I think it starts to wear off so not sure it'll work-but no harm in trying.

I agree with pp, if little one can go 3hrs between feeds then they are probably getting enough.

Thank you!
To be honest I've tried everything, from changing nappy to stroking the cheek, tickling the feet (gently), etc.
So now I'm taking it easier and accepted that she sometimes needs a break and then continues feeding. She's only 3 weeks old, so in reality she's still very little and needs her time.
But it's true, she feeds every 3 hours, so I suppose she's getting enough.
Thanks again!
