Brown stains on sheets
« on: August 25, 2010, 15:37:26 pm »
I've noticed that DS's sheets have got brown stains on them. At the head end. He is a very sweaty sleeper but these are like spit up or something. He has been NW for a while now and was just thinking if this might be something to do with it.  ???

No its not def not blood. Its been going for a while now, I just assumed it was him salivating in his sleep. Been wracking my brains about these NW though and it seems to coincide. He seems absolutely fine otherwise....apart from the screamer NW of course!  ::)

Might pop him to the GP and see what he/she thinks. I always dread it though, make me feel like such a loser sometimes.

I would also call the Dr for ideas. Is it really brown or more like a stain. Sweating could be kind of yellowish due to flaking skin mixed with sweat. Especiallywith a bit of tanned skin. My DS sweats a lot but leaves a whitish residue(salts I think) I know it sounds gross, but could you do a taste and smell test and figure out if it's bloody or salty  :-\  If it was spit up, it would have an off odor I would assume.

Austin has an off-white crib sheet and we get stains like this, but there's more of just an off-off-white rather than brown, if that makes sense. ;)  I think it's just from his drool in the night.  Maybe just the acidity of the spit on the sheets?  Something like that?  That's what I've written it off as.

Has he been teething recently?

Emma,

I should have clarified. DS1 on rare times gets a nosebleed which is not really bloody its more like mucousy old blood so brownish tinted mucous. And its an easy chcek to juts look up his nose and see if its cloggy or anything

Thanks ladies. Nope nose is clear for the first time in ages. I think he might be teething but cant get a look in his mouth.

Just changed and washed the sheets but if it happens tonight I'll be sure to have a good sniff!!

I was also going to suggest ears.  DD has a bit of light brownish couloured stuff on her sheet and on her pjs and it ended up being fluid leaking from her ears when she had a really bad ear infection.  They cause NW's as well  :-\

I agree with the ears. DS had the same stain and I looked in his ears and one was full of wax - thick and orange/brown. he then developed nasty cold.

I would def get his ears checked - when your eardrum perforates the fluid that leaks out is a browny colour (I have had a few in my life but only 1 I can remember - once it has popped there is no pain - the pain comes from the pressure buildup - it sounds worse than it is really - would also explain the sleepless nights).  Hopefully it is not this, but worth checking xx
