what to do with food on a 10-day vacation???
« on: September 01, 2010, 15:42:53 pm »
I am travelling with my 10-mth-old to hawaii for 10 days. She's been eating homemade babyfood with oat+veggie+meat/egg each meal.  I am not sure what jar food to bring with me...

I've purchased veggie+meat mix. I feel that the veggie+meat mix all taste the same (regardless of beef or chicken or turkey), will it be an issue that my DD taste the same thing every meal for 10 days?

Alternatively, should I buy seperate jar veggies and jar meat and mix it myself (this will probably taste better and more similar to the food she eats at home)? but the issue is, she will eat half a jar of meat and half a jar of veggie each meal, can I save half the jar of each for a second meal (it's really hot in Hawaii, will the food keep cool even in a cool box?)

Really look forward to some suggestions!!! thanks alot!!

Will you be staying in a hotel? If so, there should be a mini-fridge with enough room in it for a couple of jars. I would be nervous about keeping open jars in just a cooler overnight, but you should be okay for a few hours.

I haven't given my LO any meat yet, but I understand that the jarred stuff tastes different than homemade, more so than veggies. If you can, I would give her some in advance of your trip to see how she takes to it and to give her some time to adjust.

How long is your flight to Hawaii?  We travelled with our dd when she was eating homemade baby food too - it was about a 7 hr trip altogether - with layovers.  We froze containers of our own baby food, packed them in an insulated cooler and packed it in our checked luggage (it's cold up in the air in the baggage compartment).  Then the unthinkable happened, they lost our luggage.  We didn't get it back til the next morning, and when we opened up the insulated cooler - would you believe that the food was still frozen?!  Not solid, but in the slushy state - we put it in our hotel fridge and carried on as we would at home.

If that's not an option, I would definitely get her started on the jarred food at home first - maybe by mixing it with the homemade stuff first.  It really does taste different than the homemade, and it might take her a little while to adjust.

Keep in mind that there will be lots of other things you can get for her there - fresh fruits and veggies, meat off of your plate in restaurants, potatoes, breads and cereals, etc.  Lots of yummy things for finger foods and try to get her to eat them as much as possible so she is eating fewer of the jars that taste the same. You might even find that there is a different variety of jarred food over there, ones she's never tried before or that taste different, just to add a few into the mix for her.
