switching back to long PM short AM during 2-1
« on: September 12, 2010, 00:03:48 am »
My lo is currently doing some days of 1 naps and some of 2 nap days, over the past week she has been on 2 naps due to teething and a head cold that she is getting over now. As we have had the EW creep back in, i was just wondering can i try the long PM and short AM during the 2 nap days? before the 2-1 transition she was always on the long AM and short pm but we had some NW, but this was when she was around 9 months. She is now 13 half months and nearly on 1 nap, but im finding that she prefers the longer AM in the morning than at the PM, can i try it and see if she prefers the long AM now?

thanks kirsten

Hi there,
i think it is fine to see how she gets on with long am/short pm.
If you still have difficulties then post your routine and we can take a look.

Well this is on a 2 nap day

6.30am wake (3 hour 30 ish A)
10am sleep (15 min nap)
10.15am wake (2 hour 30 A)
12.50pm sleep
2.50pm wake, sometimes has 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 but normally 2 hours (4 hours A ish)
7pmish sleep

lately she has been fighting bedtime winging for a bit but goes to sleep about 15 min after, maybe needing more A time till bed? she is fine with her AM and PM nap during the day its just that by the time she goes to sleep around 7.30 its a 13 hour day, even when she wakes after her PM nap she is still tired. am thinking that between 6.30am and 1pm when she goes down for her PM nap is too longer stretch, with only a 15 min nap in there, so could i do this as someone sugested for eg on a wake up of 7am

7am wake
9.30am sleep (15 min nap)
9.45am wake
12.15pm sleep (2 hour nap or whatever she takes)
2.15pm wake
7pm sleep

i dont see the logic to keep her up for 3 hours 30 in the morning if my aim is the short AM long PM, i guess if i switched back to the long AM then yes would keep it this way but let her sleep in the AM.

thanks kirsten

p.s my lo is nearly 14 months old

Hi Kirsten,  we are in a similar situation as you.  I just gave the short am/long pm a go and it my son (13 months) didn't respond to it.  I think to keep your daughter up 3.5 hours to then only let her nap 15 minutes isn't really doing much, I know my son wouldn't get much out of that.  Maybe that is why she is still tired after her pm nap?  Built up tiredness throughout the day?  If I were you, and your LO responds well to a 15 minute nap, then I would do it earlier like you have written there at 9.30am, with then the lunch nap and the longer pm activity.  We are back in the process of doing long am/short pm at the moment, 2 x equal 1.20 min naps and I am going to do a few one nap days if my son looks as though he is capable of it.  You could give your daughter 18/19 minutes, and catch her just before she goes into that next sleep phase...  All I am learning through this 2-1 process is that I have to be a little bit flexible with the days...

My lo has been on this 2-1 road since 10 months, we are nearly switching to 1 nap but at the moment doing 1x2 nap day then 1 nap day the next and alternating, but then as soon as i see any OT i give her a 2 nap day for our 1 nap days it looks like this

7.30am wake
12.15pm sleep (2 hours to 2 hours 30 min)
2.45pm wake
7.15pm sleep

if she has 2 hours then it would be abedtime around 6.45 to 7pm

she has been on 15 min nap for 3 weeks now, and im def not going to cut that nap back any more. today was a sucess went like this

7.45am wake (2 hour 55)
10.40am sleep
10.55am wake (2 hour 45 A)
1.40pm sleep

so i put her down at 10.30am and well she just winged a bit but was a bit tired, so finally went to sleep, i never would have thought she would have but she did after 2 hour 55 A, so on 2 nap days might just leave it at 3 hours first A? what do you think? so the next A time woudl be the same? its normally 2 hours 30, but i guess she needed that extra A time so thats why she took longer to go to sleep 2 hours 45 A, so would be something like this

3 hours A
2 hour 45 A
4 hours A to 4 hours 15?

she is fighting bedtime, so may need an increase, how much should i increase by? 15 min

Why did you go back to giving 2 naps if she was doing a big nap at lunch?  Did she start waking at night or did she just seem a bit tired?  My boy is 13 months and showing signs that 2 naps is hard but one might not be enough.  Problem is, I felt shortening his am nap didn't really make him any happier.  How did it go today?
