non-oral comfort measures
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:28:38 am »
DS2 has taken to breastfeeding like a dream (I had a nightmare with DS1 and ended up having to pump full time).  My problem now is that I have no clue how to comfort DS2 other than with my boob!  With DS1, he would greedily suck on a finger and settle right down, but with DS2, I am scared to stick anything other than breast in his mouth (at least for another month or so) for fear of messing up his BFing.  What do you do to comfort your LOs when you know they aren't hungry but want to suck anyways?

I use my pinky and last night (DD is 2 weeks old) I left one hand out of the swaddle and she sucked her thumb to sleep - she lost and found it three time!!
I am not an expert but I don't think a pinky could mess bf up??? but maybe I am wrong!

In the early days when DD was having BF issues, an LC actually encouraged us to let her suck on the pinky to help strengthen her sucking muscles. I held off on a paci until she was almost 9 weeks and things had improved, but the pinky was no problem!

DS 1 and 2 only took the boob as I waited too long to offer the soother or bottle. Started right away with ds3 and I haven't had any problems with latch or anything. He prefers to soother when tired and will spit out the boob to comfort suck on the soother.
