BFing in public -best cover-ups?
« on: September 15, 2010, 02:01:48 am »
Just wondering what you experienced BFers are using as cover-ups to BF in public.  Bad ones to avoid, good ones, ponchos vs regular...I have no idea what to get!

Bumping for you :)  All I ever used was a large receiving blanket -  A bit awkward for sure, but it worked and I already had it! ;)

Found this page though that compares a few different types:  http://breastfeeding.about.com/od/breastfeedinginpublic/tp/nursingcovers.htm

I use a Bebe au Lait cover.  http://www.bebeaulait.com/  I like it, it's pretty.  ;)  But any blanket will do in a pinch, even though it's a bit trickier to navigate.  Really the key to discrete nursing in public is the right top.  Not necessarily a nursing top, any top will do but wear a nursing tank or a belly band underneath, and you hardly have to expose anything.  :)

agree w/ martina - shirts are key! sometimes the cover up bring more attention! i also had the bebe au lait top.

i also had more success w/the nursing bras that opened up from the middle vs from the top, if that makes sense!

I got some BFg tops and vests which helped me out a bit (meant I didn't have to have my tummy hanging out or anything). I used those along with pashiminas which I just wrapped around me, drapping from shoulder across my front. DS would lie / feed between the pashmina and I, so it was really discrete.

Friends use big muslins and cellular blankets and that looks pretty discrete too.

thanks ladies!
I'm still quite clumsy at BFing so I think I need some kind of cover up.  I've tried using just a burp cloth but that didn't work very well.  I ended up having DH stand in front of me to hold it up so I could latch DS and it kept sliding off.
Did any of you take pillows of any sort with you or did you just 'tuff it out' for a feed or 2?
Still trying to wrap my brain around the logistics of all this!

I used to carry a small pillow in my car with DS1 but I can't be bothered anymore!   ::)  But if you want a small pillow to take with you, those little travel-sized neck ones are great, you know they look like tiny BFding pillows that you use around your neck for long car rides or plane rides?  They're the perfect size to shove under your elbow to keep it from getting tired.  ;)

oh it will be MUCH easier once your baby can latch himself on! it is much harder in the beginning when they are just learning.

re: pashmina - what a GOOD idea!!!! why didn't i think of that? i had an october baby too!

Why didn't I think of the Pashmina OR the small travel sized neck pillow to help my elbow?!? No, I just toughed it out, fighting with a too small burp cloth and getting tennis elbow :(. Both are fabulous ideas!

Some waterfall cardigans seem to work well too - I've noticed a few BFg Mamas putting the long front bit as a wrap across to the other shoulder, making things very discrete and pretty darn stylish too!

I liked the baby au lait cover up with the more rigid front so you can see baby.  I'm not sure about the pashima idea yet as I think I need something that really can't fall off for now.  Maybe when DS is a bit older though....

Thanks ladies!
