Can you help me understand my lo?
« on: September 21, 2010, 22:29:54 pm »
Hi. I have been posting regularly on all sorts of sleep issues with ds who is 10 weeks old. I have not yet sleep trained him and plan to begin once my Miracle blankets arrive  ;D. He is very strong and breaks out of every swaddle. Really want him held tight for when I start SP (at least that's what I'm telling myself so that I can put it off a bit... ;)).

Anyway, we have been having worsening nights (up every 1.5-2 hours last night and short 45 minute naps. I was able to extend two naps to 1hr10-20 minutes yesterday by holding him and patting his bum (sp not working yet for him). Today his first nap was 1hr10 with almost no help.

Anyway, when he woke from his second nap at 1 hr I had him back to sleep in 5 minutes in my arms then as I was totally exhausted and also have a bad cold, I laid down with him on my bed. This combined with a little feed at the 2 hour mark resulted in a 3 hour nap! A similar thing happened a week or so ago. Happy me! Seems he can take long naps, as long as he is with me. Anyway, he was showing tired signs within 1/2 hour after waking so I started wind down, but couldn't get him to stay asleep till catnap 2.5 hrs later. (maybe due to long nap? although he was clearly tired...)

What does this mean? I suspect he has a bit of chronic OT due to short naps and bad nights, which explains why he was able to sleep 3 hours with my help? Other than that could it just be developmental that only has short naps then the odd long one? I would love some consistency and some Y time.

Uggh! So after waking at 6 from the catnap I ended up spending over 1.5 hours trying to get him down to bed. Then I had to go up and resettle again. I hate those marathon sessions. Not enough A time? Too much? I started bath at about 6:35. Is it normal for lo's to cry and fuss and get worked up before EVERY sleep? Sorry to blab on. I am just so frustrated that it took so long to get him down. The one thing I was able to count on was a nice 3 hour stretch 7-10 in the evening...

It's very normal for them to need to fuss and cry a bit before every sleep.

I think it's developmental that he can sleep easily with you and not so easily in his basket. Completely normal. Of course babies love to cosleep! :-*

As for bedtime, it's difficult to say what went wrong. You don't say what time it was. the littlest thing can set them off at this age, could have been a touch of tummy ache, overstimulation, overtiredness... just one of those days?
