New here - HELP!
« on: September 23, 2010, 14:22:07 pm »
My 3.5 mo DD is having serious sleep issues at night.  Until she was 10 weeks old, she slept like a champ -  6-8 hour stretches, feed, another 2 hour stretch.  She slept that time in her car seat.  When we transitioned her to her crib, things didn't go well.  Now, if we're lucky, she sleeps 3 - 4 1/2 hours and then 2 hour intervals.  If we're not lucky, she wakes every 45 - 90 mins all night long!!  Clearly, we've done some accidental parenting and established some bad habits already.

I got the BW book from the library yesterday, and we're trying to start some of the routines today.  My DD naturally fell into an Eat - Activity - Sleep routine (as long as she wasn't completely overtired from having been up the previous night).  Sometimes those naps are in the stroller while we're out, in the Ergo or Baby Bjorn, and some in the crib.   I tried my first shush-pat to get her to sleep this morning just now, and we were able to do it in 25 mins!  Usually she wakes from crib naps after 45 mins on the dot, so we'll see how she does now.

Anyway, this is all a long way of saying, what advice do you all have for me?  Can I start shush-pat / PU/PD tonight to help her get out of the NW pattern?  Is it OK to use the pacifier to help her go to sleep?  It really works like a charm for her.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi there - welcome! - Yes  please post your EASY - also does your LO have reflux or any gastric problems?  Just wondering why they were sleeping in car seat at night - if reflux is an issue then being flat could cause discomfort so you could try putting a large book under the crib mattress at the head end.

I did use PUPD with my DS, but not until he was 4 months old and it worked a treat alongside Shh/hand on chest (he never liked being patted - overstimulating for him) - I used it at nap times to get him used to it, trying to extend his naps (i never did manage to extend them)then I think when I used techniques at night he was then accustomed to them...

Hugs  :)

With my boys I have found that when you start working on the day, the night will follow. Something is off during the day. If she on;y does 45 minute naps, she migt be OT which means she can't settle during the night.
And I agree on the soother, it might have become a problem.
So yes, please post your EASY routine so we can see if it needs some adjustment during the day, she might need earlier naps for a while to get rid of the OT
