1 year old: Bed Time is wonky!
« on: October 21, 2010, 02:57:06 am »
Hi everyone,

We recently transitioned to 1 nap---somedays we have 2 when she is pretty tired but most days it is 1 nap. Her bedtime is always at 7 or 7:30 and there used to be no issues. This week however she has started not settling well. She is in her crib rolling around, talking to her lovey, and I have been going in there to try to get her to wind down a bit more. Sometimes she ends up not falling asleep until 8:30 or 9. This has led to a few EW. I've put her to bed earlier to try to account for this but that has ended up with her doing the same thing. Tonight I put her down at 7:15 and she went straight to sleep but she woke at 11 and is rolling around. She's not crying, just rolling around. Here is our typical EASY, I'm just confused as to what to do...

Wake 5, goes back to sleep (this used to not happen)
Wake 6:30/7 or 7/7:30 (Depending on how her night is)
E/A: 7:30-11:15
S: 11:15-2/2:30
E/A: 2:30-7
S: falling asleep varies---see above.

Anything jump out?

What was her routine like before you switched to one nap? Is she getting more or less daytime sleep/nighttime sleep now that she has moved to one nap? Doesn't sound like teething if she is happy. Sorry I have no real ideas but these are the questions I'd be asking myself in your shoes.

Hope someone else has some ideas and you can get bedtime back on track - well done on getting that lovely long nap though!!

If she is getting more daytime sleep with one nap you probably have your answer - esp. as she's (or she was) doing a 12hr night.

She is getting more daytime sleep. When she wanted to drop the 2nd nap she was having a 1.5 hour AM nap and I'd really have to work to get a PM nap. She'd average about 2 hours total of daytime sleep (if I was lucky).

Incidentally, she is teething. Just found a bud this morning. Last night when she woke she would yell out, fall back asleep, wake 20 min later and repeat. At midnight, I went up there and gave her some Ibuprofen and Orajel and she slept until 6:45.

I added that to our BT routine tonight and she is up there talking with her lovey at 7:15. I guess we'll see what happens...what time do LO's usually go to bed? I can't imagine much past 7:30...right?

If she was averaging 2hrs day sleep before the switch you have 2 options.  This first is to cap the nap - but I would cap it at 2.5hrs, or move bedtime much later.  There are a lot of LOs who do a long nap and a 7.30/8pm bed but you have to do what's best for you.  If it were me I think I would try the 2.5hr nap and still a 7pm bed for a week and see what happens.

Ok sounds good. Poor thing, I worked so hard to extend naps and now I end up waking her up :)

thanks for the advice! I'll try it.
