Getting 3 month old to eat more during the day
« on: November 30, 2010, 19:00:48 pm »
I have posted before about this but need more help. My LO turned 3 months on the 24th (or is now 13.5 weeks) and she is EBF. During the day at her daycare they have to attempt her bottle up to 3 times to get her to drink more. I provide 4oz bottles, they try to feed her on a 3-hour schedule. During the time she is there, she gets 3 bottles, everyday the amounts she drinks at each feeding are different. From the first bottle she may take 2oz, then they reattempt 30 minutes later, she may or may not take more, if so, maybe only 1/2 an oz. And this repeats for all 3 bottles. She was doing this when she was on the 2-hour schedule and is still doing it on the 3-hour, so it is not like she is not hungry. I have changed the type of flow and nipple, I also provide a blanket that smells like me.

In the book they say to add an oz to the bottle to get them to take more during the day, well, if she will not drink more than 8oz during the time she is at daycare, how can I get her to drink more. I feed her before she goes to care, her first bottle with them is 3 hrs later, I have to still cluster feed her before bed, we give her a dreamfeed because she wakes up hungry during that time anyway....

Please help....

Have you tried a different type of bottle/ nipple with a different shape or texture? What is her behaviour like when she feeds, does she have any signs of reflux?

Yes, we have tried different types of nipple, flow etc.

No signs of reflux, just will drink some, burp then turn head away from drinking more. Also, she loves to play, like having the nip in her mouth and smiling and "spitting" out any milk in her mouth.

I'd like to follow this post too, if you don't mind. My 12 week DS doesn't ever want to take more than 90mls each feed, and fusses after about 60mls. Although my boy has reflux, colic and MSPI, I can't ever seem to increase his feed amounts. I hear some 12wk lo's are taking anywhere between 120ml and 250mls. The most I've ever got him to drink is 150mls and that was through a GS!
There is a silent reflux that means they don't spit up it just hits the back of their throat and goes back down, but is still very painful. If you're sure it's not reflux, maybe contact a lactation consultant to observe you BF and see what help they can provide.

Update on this. My LO is still not drinking a lot. She did go through a 3 month "growth-spurt" but it did nto help that much. She still is drinking less than she should and it actually showed at her 4-month appt. She went from the 50-percentile to the 25-percentile. The doctor said she was not "concerned" because she is gaining weight. But to me, she should be more. I mean, come on, she is almost 4 months old (on the 24th) and she weights 12lbs 4oz!!!! I know each kid is different but my OD was almost 2lbs heavy at this age!!!
