day and night 3 hours???
« on: December 13, 2010, 16:01:38 pm »

hello to all.... my DD is nearly 3 weeks old, and is on a very good 3 hour during the day, and aften wakes every 3 hours during the night? but a little bit confused as i cluster but she still wakes up around the DF time and then is awake from there? if she is asleep at DF time shall i leave her to see how long she goes and let her wake for feed when she is hungry? i am BF her.

it is so nice to recieve help from others, i know she is only little but there are so many people telling me there babies have a feed at 10-11 and sleeping through til 3-4am??? but cluster and a a small feed at these times is not making her go longer than 3 hours, have i started AP?

I would love this as having other young children i would like more sleep!

Well, not all babies are the same!!  It's still perfectly normal for some to wake every 3hrs for quite awhile, especially when they're so little.  My DS2 woke every 3hrs for months, and it took even longer for him to sleep at least one 4hr stretch.  I guess the way I always thought about it was, if it had been 3hrs or more I would feed him.  3hrs or less and then he wouldn't be really hungry and feeding would cause a habit.  Then once he was able to go 4hrs during the day, I expected him to be able to go 4hrs or longer at night but not feed if it had been less.  Once we got a few things sorted and he was old enough that I knew he could go longer, I started stretching his night feeds further.  But for us it took a long time to get there, I was still feeding him every 4hrs up until recently and he is 7mos!  Now he is going longer at night.

Really though, very tiny babies have tiny stomachs and some will need to eat that often even at night.  I know it's hard with other children, I have a 2yo as well.  As she gets bigger you can expect her to go longer stretches.  :)

Hi and (((hugs)))  I just quickly responded to your other thread, but wanted to reassure you that what you're going through is completely normal.  Definitely hard, especially with other los to look after too, but completely normal.  Martina is right - your lo is still so tiny and new to the world, and has a tiny stomach to boot.  A tiny tummy and oh-so-easy to digest breastmilk make for frequent feeds at this young age :-*
