Crying at the end of every feed
« on: December 16, 2010, 19:31:36 pm »
My DD is just over 6 mo now and I'm still trying to persevere with BF but it's become a real battle. I normally BF the daytime feeds and then give her a bottle of formula in the evening before bed. I've suspected supply and let down problems for the last few weeks. I've taken fenugreek (which I had to stop because it gave her diarrhoea) milk thistle, oatmeal and milk maid tea. I express after most feeds, but still after most feeds she cries in what seems like frustration. She feeds fine but seems to down both sides in about 7 minutes and then tries to get more but bobs on and off and cries. Today after her afternoon feed I offered her a bottle of formula too because she was so upset and she downed 8 oz! It didn't do my confidence much good! Surely she wouldn't down 8 oz if she'd had enough from me? Or would she drink the whole bottle just because it was offered to her? I really dont want to stop BF but if she genuinely isn't getting enough then I'm going to have to  :(

I had a similar problem and my doctor put me on a medication to increase my supply. You may need this as well. I take Reglan 3x a day and it is has helped my production tremendously.

Thanks :) sounds like its worth a try - if it enables me to keep BF it'll be worth it

I found that my supply always takes a bad dip the week before, and right at the start of my period. This may be the same for you. I use the Reglan then especially. I'd give it a try. I don't have any side effects from it. Good luck!

Ok thanks :-) On that note....do you know if your supply can dip if you're pregnant? I was expecting my period about a week ago and nothing's happened. I'm too nervous to do a test....... :-)

Yes it can. Hormones are the driving force behind milk production. Changes in hormone levels cause changes in quantity of milk produced. My period is still fairly irregular right now while I'm still BF, so it may not be pg, but I'd test just to make sure.

If you are not wanting to get pg right now there are some non-hormonal ways to prevent it. I had a Paragard IUD implanted after Kate. I honestly don't know if they are available in the UK, but it might be something to check into.

Thanks :-) I'll give it a few more days and then see. It could be a fun christmas present :-)
