Will this hurt my supply??
« on: December 21, 2010, 17:12:04 pm »
I'm thinking of giving myself a Christmas present, but I'm not sure if it will affect my supply.

Had feeding and supply issues with DD right from the beginning. Long story short, had to supplement, wound up on domperidone, managed to wean all supplements but one after she had a nursing strike. I kept the bedtime supplement since that's been the one feed where she never seemed quite happy afterwards (plus I was trying to get her to sleep ::)).

I hated the bedtime feed with DS. He was so fussy and irritable that I switched that feed to a bottle at 5.5 months. I 've wanted to with DD (she's 7.5 months now), but I always worry about my supply. Bedtime feedtime takes FOREVER though, since she's fussy, she'll go 15 min or so on the breast and then I give her the top-up.

What do people think?

Are you still doing night feeds?  How many feeds a day are you doing?

She feeds 4 times during the day, DH does the DF while I pump, and she wakes most nights for one feed.

Hi there,
I think that if that is going to make you happier then just go for it. You  can see how it affects your supply in a couple of days and see how it works. The important thing, even to help you continue BF, is to make it pleasurable.

Thanks for responding! I keep telling myself "This week I'm going to do it," and then I put it off again because of supply worries. If I wasn't still on those stupid pills... Short of her not gaining weight again, how could I be sure if it affected my supply? That was how I knew I couldn't get off the domperidone: I was on 9 pills a day, I dropped a pill a week and got her weighed. When I went from 6 pills to 5 she didn't gain a thing that week, so I went back up to 6 and have been stuck there. :P

Really other than weight gain the other measures of your supply would be wet nappies, your LO being satisfied at the end of a feed and lasting 3-4hrs between feeds.
What you can also do it pump for a few days to replace that feed, would you do bottle of EBM?

I pump for the supplement as it is, so I would just keep going with that (and hopefully get a little more/enough for the full feed). Right now at bedtime she feeds for about 15 min., and then will take 3 oz. of EBM afterwards. Then I pump while she's sleeping for the next night's supplement, and DH gives her formula for the DF.

Diapers are all fairly wet. She's just so laid back that I figure she'd be happy with whatever she gets. ::) That was part of the problem at the beginning: she was so dozy, and when I could wake her to eat it wasn't very efficient, so she was never getting to the hind milk. Even after all the herbals/drugs/pumping/supplementing with EBM, she only finally started gaining weight when I switched her supplements to formula (not getting any but the bedtime one anymore, and that's EBM). Needless to say, the whole experience made me a wee little bit paranoid when it comes to my supply :P

I agree with Tay.  But I can understand your concern :(

It sounds to me like you have a good hang on the supply issue. But it is very hard to get over the initial difficulties... I remember with DD I had all sorts of diffs and I still worry, to date! (she's 3) if she's eating enough!
Let us know how you get on will you?

Will do. Thanks ladies. :) I'm thinking right now that I'll keep going as is until she's 8 months old (next week), and then maybe I'll try giving her a bottle every couple of nights. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck :)
I had an over supply then an under supply and I still worry even though she's growing.
It's just not fair that our boobs don't come with a dipstick to measure quantity.

A dipstick would be quite handy!  ;D
