4 month old - dragging out feeds and weaning
« on: January 07, 2011, 19:42:00 pm »
Hi all,

My little girl , Katelyn is 4 months old and is currently having 5 x 6oz bottles a day - 7am, 10am 1pm, 4pm and 6.45pm. She sleeps throughout the night.

She isnt finishing all her milk so I am thinking that maybe she could possibly go from 3 hourly feeds to 4 hourly and maybe up to 7oz.

Does this sound realistic or do you think I should stick to what I am doing at the moment?

Also, I plan to start weaning when she's 6 months, how's the best way to start this?

Many thanks for reading, any help is appreciated  :)

She could be ready for 4 hour feeds, bottle fed babies do move to 4 hourly feeds sooner than breastfed babies. You can either just feed at 4 hourly intervals or you can shift her gradually by pushing feeds further apart by 10, 15 mins over a few days.

When she hits 6 months you can either start the "traditional" way with purees and rice cereal or just start with finger food and go the Baby Led Weaning route (BLW). Have a look here for some info http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=118497.0

Thankyou for your reply. I will read about baby led weaning. Should i increase her bottles to 7oz too?

She should take more so yes, make 7oz and see how she goes! I fixed the links in my last post so there is a BLW one there now too ::). We did a combination of finger foods and puree for my two and progressed onto lumpier/ thicker foods quite quickly, so you don't have to follow just one approach!

She's drinking the full 7oz every 4 hours  ;D

I am so shocked that she just waited the 4 hours and then tucked right in!

Yeah!

If she is draining all those 7oz bottles you can put another oz in. There should be enough in the bottle so that they can finish because they are full, not just because the bottle is empty.

Sounds like she is doing great!
