Waking 45 mins or an hour after going to bed...help!
« on: January 23, 2011, 08:31:20 am »
Hi there,

DS2 is 9.5mo and has started waking early after going to bed. He's also having difficulty settling to bed in the first place - really resisting it and refusing to settle. Last few nights I've given extra top up feed then patted him off, tonight Dh convinced me to let him mantra cry and it took him 8 mins to cry then sleep.

Any advice on helping him go down well for the night and stay asleep would be wonderful.

We are on two naps, no catnap, no DF.

Nap 1 is aprox 10:30 and is between 45mins-1.25h long (he needs a long A time to nap here)
Nap 2 is approx 2:45pm and is generally 45mins long
Bedtime is 7pm. We are shooting for morning wakeup of 7am but the day can start anywqhere between 5:45 and 6:45am.

So my questions are:
what should I tweak to make going down at night better and staying asleep happen?
When he wakes, what should I do? Is patting the right thing? Or let him mantra cry? (Would go in if it became I'm on fire)

Thanks :)

Thanks for you reply Jane :) I really need some help. Everything's a struggle atm.

Our EASY is

W any time between 5:20 and 6:50am, will mantra cry then go quiet for blocks of time, possibly going back to sleep?
DH will get him when he starts the I'm on fire cry and try to hold him off for his feed.

E 6:45/7am (both sides)
E solids 8am
S 10:30-11:15 (This is long A time but it was the only way I could get a nap of longer than 45mins...not happening now though. He doesn't seem tired going down here)

E 11:15 (only took 1 side yesterday, refused other)
E solids 12:15
S 2:30-3:15 (this nap has become a lot earlier since he started doing a 45min morning nap a few days ago)

E 3:15 (took both sides yesterday)
E solids 5:15
bath 6pm
E 6:45pm (usually both sides, yesterday took only one and left me engorged and sore all night)
Bed 7pm (used to go down like a dream, now mantra cries for 5mins or a little more).

No DF

Naps and nights he's become difficult to settle, and to add to the mix he's refusing to feed both sides (rejected my right side both times which is scary for me as I always get mastitis in that side). Teething is happening too.

Yes we regularly give teething gel and used to give Hyland's teething tablets too, but they have been removed from our shelves at the moment. We also give the occasional dose of Panadol (our pain relief med) at night.

He still wakes an hour into sleep even after pain meds.

Those wake ups are almost definitely from OT, we have had them many a time  :P My remedy for OT is always an earlier bedtime, the not being able to settle at bedtime also indicates he is OT by bedtime, maybe even 15 mins earlier will help, my dd couldn't cope with a long A time before bed right up until she gave her nap up!
