What are normal A times for 22month old?
« on: January 25, 2011, 13:16:49 pm »
DD is 22 months. Until recently she was sleeping 11-12 hrs at night, having a morning A time of 6 hrs and a nap of about 2hrs. Recently though she started shortening her naps and taking ages to settle at nap time. She also started waking slightly earlier (6.30 instead of 7am). I tried making a later bedtime (8pm instead of 7) to try and extend naps but this hasn't worked. Last night she slept at 8pm, woke at 6am and still hasn't napped yet!  :o (It is now 2.15pm). I brought her home from nursery at 1 and tried to put her down at about 1.20 but she has been playing in her cot since then.

I don't know what to make of this. Is she OT, UT? Surely she's still far too young to be dropping her nap? I'd really like to know what other toddlers of this age do, and if anyone has any ideas about what's going on!  ???

Thanks xxx

at that age we were doing...
A - 6.45am
S - 12.15/30-2-2.15pm
Bed - 7.15pm

what you are describing is happening sounds similar to what is happening to us right now.

I am pretty sure she does still need her nap. Have you tried a nap earlier? If she is up at 6am i would be going for about midday as that is still 6 hours and after a shorter night. Seems like she may have got OT somehow. How is her mood?

If you haven't compensated for the short naps/no naps then it's likely OT.  Bring bedtime earlier.  She's still teething right?  I think it's teeth.  Our lives were miserable with teeth.  Could not stay on top of any routine.

Finn's routine is pretty much:
Awake 5:30/6
Nap 12:30 - 2:30
Bedtime asleep between 7:15-7:30

We had some days there recently where he was fighting bedtime and/or taking ages to go to sleep...we had to move bedtime earlier and it helped.  When he fights bedtime it's very rarely UT due to his short nights.

In fact in most cases all of our routine tweaks have always been to OT.  I never get it through my head.  He will go several days of being or seeming fine and then it just all goes to pot.  Maybe I will learn one of these days lol
The tweaking never stops!

Thanks ladies! She finally napped from 2.30-4pm and I put her to bed at 8. I think OT is the only thing that makes sense TBH. Her mood is pretty good though. She was playing in cot before nap and she was quite happy playing until 8 this evening.

The problem with an earlier nap is when she goes to nursery. If she wakes at 7 I can get her back and into bed by 1, so 6hrs A. But if she wakes up at 6 it ends up being more like 7hrs. I can sometimes get her back by 12.30 but earlier than that is difficult.

She is still teething. Don't know if there's anything emerging right now though. Night times haven't really been a problem, she goes to sleep without too much trouble. But she's been waking earlier and resisting naps. Finn is a similar age; does he cope OK with 7hrs A? Maybe I can try for something similar to his routine, though I can't make her nap longer! And if she won't naap right away I can't make her either! :-\

Hi.  I agree with pp's.  There are things not under our control and so we work with them.  If you can't make nap earlier, she ends up having a late nap, then bring bedtime slightly earlier to compensate, rather than later.  Even when she seems fine, with the overall A time for the day and nap time, it should be earlier bed.  But then see what tonight brings, we might get a better picture.

we have this problem too but not much you can do it about it really...frustrating though....
If she is still teething I BET that is a big part of the issue....teeth generally cause havoc with DS sleep...

Today Eleanor woke up at 6 again. Because she wasn't at nursery I got her down for her nap at 12. She slept from 12.15 to 2.15, without any resistance! Guess I need to try not to let A time go over 6hrs, though not always easy. I think I'm going to go back to earlier bed time though as a later one didn't seem to make a difference. Was thinking 7-7.15 tonight. Does that makes sense?

Thank you all for your help!

Finn crashes at 7 hrs, he's most ready at 6ish A.  When teething he can be tired anywhere from 3-6 hrs A - it's really a guessing game!  Yes I would stick to a 7 bedtime for now to see if you can keep her on track for a bit.  2 hrs in the day and 11 at night is perfect.

Well its definitelt teeth! Last night she woke up at midnight and just would not resettle. Every time I left the room she started crying. I couldn't face a night sleeping on the floor in her room (not while pregnant!) so she ended up in bed with me  :-[ I really didn't want to resort to that but what else can I do? Of course snuggled up next to mummy she slept in until 7.15  :P I had a look this morning and I can see one of the upper canines beneath the surface. I really hope this doesn't become a habit again; she's becoming quite manipulative!

We're having the same issues, I've tried all sorts over the past couple of months trying to establish if its OT/UT or whatever. Can't solve it. He's now ill with a cold/cough so is waking at night coughing. I'm still not convinced it's teeth but its my last resort so will be medicating at BT once he's better to see if that helps I think.
