Am I doing W2S correctly? How long does it take to work?
« on: January 27, 2011, 20:34:30 pm »
Hi! I know in my bible the W2S seems very simple! I've never needed it before, but my little DS has started to HW at 9.15pm for anywhere between 1 & 2 hours and 4.30am for up to 30mins! Love him.
Do I tackel them both or one at a time?
He is nearly 8m and was sleeping through utill a week ago.
I have just done W2S at 8.15pm, he moved a little and growned, is that enough? He sleeps on his front so I can't see the darting of his eyes.
I am also feeding him at around 10pm, this was settling him back to sleep but not last night, he is taking 6oz and this is almost the most he takes in one go apart from the bedtime feed. Should I stop this feed?
Last night he woke at 9.20 rather than 9.15, is this what happens? How long does it usualy take?
Thank you for any help and experience. C  ???

You need to do it consistently for at least 3 days before you will see results. You may find that you need to adjust your timing a bit too if you don't see improvement after a few days - week. Remember, you just want to stir him but not actually wake him. So yes moving a little and groaning should be enough.

Hard to say without knowing how old he is ;)

Thank you so much for your reply. I feel better that at least I was doing something right!
My DS is nearly 8m, he was ill all over Christmas and for the first few weeks in Jan and we have got ourselves into a right pickle, I know alot of it is AP!
Last night was a success in one respect, he didn't wake at 9.15pm, but I guess I still do W2S at 8.15 just in case? But the rest of the night was a night mare! He woke at 11.55 and was awake for 2 hours, then again at 4.30am and then did not sleep until 8.45am, totaly wired all day and I'm dreading tonight.
I did DF at 10pm is this messing him around as well?
When he was awake he was very happy and wanted to be up as though it was just afer a nap rather than the middle of the night.
Should I do W2S at 11pm as well?
Thank you for help. I'm pretty desperate at mo havent slept since 16th Dec but I know I'm not the only one. I also have older Ds as well!
Thank you again C  :D

At 8 mo it's pretty unlikely that he actually needs a night feed. Also, Tracy recommended ending the DF around 7 mo because after that it can mess with sleep cycles. i suspect that some adjustments to your routine may help, can you post what you're currently doing in EAS form?

Hi,
Last night was much better than expected, I didn't DF and he went all the way through until 3.30pm.
I W2S at 8.15pm and 11pm with success. Not sure if to drop the 8.15pm one yet or not, and try for a 2.30am one, but this was only a wake up one night. What do you think?
His EAS does vary due to the time he wakes up.
If 6.00am wake                                                                7am wake
7am E                                                                             7.15 am E
8am S (for 20 mins taking DS1 to school)                              A take to school & back
A for 1.5hrs                                                                      9am S
10.30 S                                                                            11am A
12 E                                                                                12 E
2pm S (but have to get out of cot at 3pm)                             1pm S
4.30/5pm E                                                                       2.30/3pm A School & play after
6pm Bath Bed/bottle 6.30pm                                                 5 E
                                                                                       Same bed time & bath
Thank you for all of your advice.

That's GREAT! I wouldn't drop the 8:15 just now though, just in case.

On your 6am wake days, the A times are pretty long especially the first part of the day. I'd definitely do nap earlier than 10:30.

Hi, Thank you, I will try to keep activity time short when 6am wake but of course classes are also then, but I have decided to drop down to doing only two a week until I've got his sleep back on track. Just swimming  & music class, he seems to love these the most and after each one he sleps for at least 2hrs!
Would you mind commenting on last night? I really appreciate your help and support.
I did W2S at 8.15pm but he woke at 8.40pm only for about 25mins.
Did W2S 11pm. Was about to do W2S at 2am but he woke up, this is not a time he has done before, I considered feeding him but though about what you said and decided not to and managed to get him back to sleep in about 40mins with no feed or out of cot.
He woke up for day at 5.15am! Sleeping at mo! Long may it last.
My DS1 has just come down with another cold so hope coughing won't add to waking!
Thank you again.

Consistency is really important, so I would stick with your original plan. Doing something different every day will mess with sleep cycles in the wrong way.

AHHHHH! What a night last night, he woke every sleep cycle from 8.30ish unill 2am then 4.30am untill 6.40am!
Where does that leave me?
What am I doing wrong? Or is he as I suspect beginning teething again combined with brothers cold!
Do I just carry on what I'm doing or do I W2S, I'm just not sure if W2S is having any effect if other factors are waking him up!
I know in a few months I will be worrying about something else but at the moment this is all consuming!
I also read another posting on Pantley's no cry sleep programme, any thoughts?
Thank you again for all replies.

8 mo is definitely prime age for teething, and if that's the case all you can do is make sure you're medicating for sleep time and get through it.

You're not doing anything wrong, really. There are always going to be good days and bad days just because or for a variety of reasons and that's normal. It won't last forever. Just carry on :)

Hi! I had to look up what GW was! Yes I guess it is but I don't remember it from Tracy's book, but I can't retain much at the moment!
I found the information in the 'frequently asked questions' part of 'night wakings', but I guess it's the same with moving away from holding to patting, then just 'sssh' then by cot and eventually by door!
I find it so amazing that my two boys can be sooooo different! DS1 was awful at sleeping in the day but I never heard from him at night and he's still so active I think he wears his tachers out! Where as DS2 is Ok at sleeping day but thats it, thank goodness he's a sweety and very smiley what ever his sleep is like.
Thank you again.
