Weaning
« on: February 10, 2011, 18:10:23 pm »
I would like to wean the daytime feeds.  I have just gotten over a bout of mastitis (I have an over supply) and am afraid of getting it again.  Any suggestions on how to take down my milk supply during the day?

Are you intending to wean to formula during the day but continue to breastfeed for night feeds? Have you read the http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=157385.0 FAQ? Do you have a breast pump at all?

Hi Vikki,

Thank you, I found the links very helpful.  I would like to continue to bf for the morning, dinner and DF.  She does take formula without any issues and yes I pump.  Right now I am pumping most bottles as I am on antibiotics and they didn't sit well in her tummy.

I tried dropping the 4/5 pm feed for about 10 days but then got mastitis so I'm a little afraid...

Here's another link that you might find helpful:  http://www.kellymom.com/bf/weaning/weaning-from-pump.html

To prevent the mastitis, you could drop the actual feed that you want to (one at a time) but pump at that time instead of stopping it cold turkey.  Then you could slowly wean yourself off the pump (eg, pump 10m for 3 days, then 8m for 3 days, 6m, etc.) at whatever pace you're comfortable with.  Do you think that something like that could work for you?

Thanks Vicki, I think that is a great piece of advice and will be attempting to drop daytime feed number two later this week.

Here's to the weather being warmer this week :)
