Should I give her a bottle?
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:51:06 am »
Hi there,

DD is 2 next month and is teething quite babdly.  She has really gone off her food and eats very little at the moment.  She hardly touched her dinner, but took a full bottle of milk before bed.  She woke in the night asking for her bottle as I guess she was hungry.  Should I giver her a bottle in the night? I tried 4 different types of food for dinner and I dont like all the waste and it's very time consuming!!
Any advice would be really appreciated,

TIA,

Siobhan

I would have say no honey. I think you are opening up a while can of worms. I would just try something for dinner she likes and if she doesn't eat it well she'll make up for it next day. When DS eats very little I always offer him yoghurt for dessert, he loves it and it fill him up.

DS has days when he eats next to nothing ( esp when teething). He wakes up the next morning startving for his breakfast. They get good at self regulating their food.

What Emma said... My DS is a picky toddler to begin with. When teething, ill or after vaccines his appetite drops and he gets even pickier. If he doesn't eat dinner I've been offering a bedtime snack (oatmeal or challah french toast) along with his bedtime bottle - usually 1-1.5 hours after dinner. But that's it then until morning. I offer water only middle of night...

Have you tried medicating an hour before dinner to see if that helps her eat better at all?

Agree with the others - I think it would a journey down a very slippery slope. If you are worried about calorie intake when she's eating very little you can always make up jelly cubes with milk instead of water - always goes down well in our house!!

Thanks everyone,

It's been going on for nearly a week now - if it was just a day or so I wouldn't mind so much as she is not a huge eater anyway.  I have offered her all her favorites and even resorted to giving her home made chips with ketchup for her dinner today as she refused everything else.  I offered her an additional bottle with her snack and she even refused that!!  Very unusual as she loves her bottle.  I am against giving the bottle in the night and only offer water and meds. I will try meds before her meals in the day to see if that helps.  She has a wee blister on her lip - any ideas as to what that could be?? I am going away for the weekend soon and I know that DH will give her a bottle in the night as a 'quick fix' so he can get back to sleep, so I am hoping that she will be STTN before that so I dont have another problem to deal with when I get home!!

Thanks for all your help,

Siobhan
