Reducing milk when introducing solids?
« on: February 18, 2011, 10:06:48 am »
Hi there!

I'm just after a bit of advice really. DS is now 5 months and on two meals of starter porridge a day (breakfast and lunch). He's taken to it really well and loves his food! My question is do I reduce his breastfeeds or not? He's quite happy to continue with the same amount of feeds as before even with porridge and juice on top! This is his current routine (which he has decided on himself over the months) 7 BF, 9-10 nap, 10 BF, 11-11:30 sometimes has a nap, 1 BF, 3-3:30 nap, 4 BF, 5-6 nap, 8 bottle and bed for the night. We normally put breakfast somewhere between 7 and 10 and lunch somewhere between 1 and 3...any thoughts?! :)

Thanks in advance! :D

No I wouldnt reduce milk feeds as milk is more important than food at his age.  I would be guided by him as he will start to drop feeds/take less at his feeds of his own accord.

I agree.  Food is just for fun at this stage.  Keep the milk feeds the same.

Agreeing with pps, you definitely don't want him to be decreasing his milk intake.  Milk will be his primary source of nutrition until he is a year old, with solids being for fun and supplementary nutrition.  Especially at such a young age, you want to make sure he still drinks all his milk feeds before filling him up on solids.  Keep offering milk feeds before solids.  Here are some helpful links:
