Newborn cluster feeds question
« on: March 02, 2011, 19:57:20 pm »
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, my baby is only 5 days old and I wasn't planning on starting BW just yet but I started taking a note of her feeding times since yesterday and she fit in the E.A.S.Y. 3-hour routine perfectly (maybe it's just "beginner's luck" and things will change soon, I know it's early days!), she cluster fed of her own accord last night at exactly the times suggested by the book, although it took some time to settle her and go to sleep after her dream feed (started at 10.30 and she was down by about midnight), she had a feed at 4am and then woke up at 7am and fed every 3 hours like clockwork since then.
I though I'd try to wake her up to cluster feed tonight to see if it could work already, she wasn't in a deep sleep so she woke up pretty quickly but only fed for just over 10 minutes, while her other feeds have been about 20/30 minutes. Is this normal? I tried to burp her and offer the breast again but she was fast asleep. Also, since she probably didn't empty that breast, should I offer the same one at the next cluster feed, or perhaps pump a bit to make sure milk supply stays up? I doesn't seem to be a problem at the moment, my milk came in by the end of day 2 and I'm sure she's getting enough as her nappies are really heavy (and she sometimes does massive wees when I change her!). I don't mind pumping to stimulate more, is it worth it, or would you go for a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach?
Thank you very much, and please let me know if this has been answered before (I couldn't find it anywhere) or if I've posted in the wrong place!

Just hopping on board to see what others say as DS is 9 days old! I am just following his lead just now and some days he has been every 3 hours but other days it is different - we are just trying to look at his cues (although sometimes hard to decipher) and taking it from there.  Personally with DS1 I found that when I tried to waken him for feeds etc it wouldn't work!

L x Having a bw break from 1 Feb 2012 - if you want to get in touch please send me a pm.  I may not be here but you are all in my thoughts xxxx (probably be back some time)

still happily married, just not counting!

5 days is very young! Good on you for trying to get on EASY straight up.

I found that initially dd would always properly wake for a dream feed, but after a few go's at it, she almost learnt that she didn't need to wake properly as she knew what to do. I guess she also got used to the handling during sleep too. I could pick her up and she would stir slightly, and then just (this sounds terrible) sort of push her face towards my breast and she'd open up and latch right on iykwim.  Although I did it successfully, I don't know a whole lot about the dream feeding... so I don't know if it takes a little while for baby to 'learn' what they need to do. I know I had attachment issues for the first 3-4 weeks of BF... so we had no hope of DF, when she couldn't latch on properly. Once we sorted that, it all kinda clicked. So perhaps you just need to give it a little more time practising?

Hope this helps.  :)
