LO gags when eating??
« on: March 03, 2011, 10:16:25 am »
I started weaning DS at 4.5months on advice of HV.  He started on baby rice & then veg & fruit purees & so far has been loving it.

Now he's 6months I'm gradually introducing him to new foods like weetabix, ready brek, chicken, fish, red meat, lentils, cheese & pasta.

However, a lot of these things are really making him gag.  Not sure if its the taste (not sweet enough??) or the texture (too thick??). Even mashed potato mixed with his milk makes him gag.  He's had runny purees for quite a while & I read that he should be able to cope with them being a bit thicker now, in preparation for adding texture by the time he's 7-8months.

I've also tried him on a few finger foods e.g. banana, steamed carrot batons & toast & he sucked at them, but when a piece broke off into his mouth he gagged on this too.

Anyone elses LO's done this & got any advice for me??  Do I just wait til he's a little older before trying finger foods again or will I make him more resistant by not exposing him to these things early on??

Just keep going. Gagging is fine, normal, in fact positive - it is part of the process of him learning to move food around his mouth without accidentally choking or swallowing before he is ready.

Yep, it's normal and some LOs do take a little longer to get the hang of it, but it's quite ok.  Just try not to panic as your reaction might frighten him.  Gagging is scarier for mommies than for LOs!  ;)

thanks for the reassurance Anna & Martina.

I agree!  I do keep my cool though as I know he's gotta learn.  It absolutely petrifies DH though!! :o

Anyway, I'm sticking with it - he had some toast yesterday & a rice cake today, & although he gagged a bit, he did actually eat some.

I was scared too. We actually did an infant first aid course run by our maternity hospital so that I would know what to do if he did choke!

I think even if you go on You Tube you can watch first aid procedures.  Might help put your mind at ease.  :)
