Night Wakings & Reflux!!!
« on: March 07, 2011, 16:21:44 pm »
We have a 4 month old on a 4 hour EASY schedule.  We began using PU/PD 3 days ago.  He continues to have a night wakings to feed.  He has been diagnosed with reflux.  We have him medicated for it, in addition to elevating his crib mattress, although neither seems to help his discomfort during the night.  We have tried to increase the amount we give him each feed throughout the day to help him through the night, however this just causes him to spit-up more, and won't often even finish the feed.  He typically wakes between 4:00-5:00 am in obvious discomfort, and PU/PD simply doesn't seem to work at this point, as he really only wants to be held upright.  If I have him sleep on me upright for the remainder of the night, is there any risk of it becoming counter-productive in my PU/PD progression?

Im afraid that if he is still in discomfort/ pain from the reflux then you really won't be able to sleep train, it just won't work. Can you tell us a bit more about his meds - what is he on, how much and what is his weight and how long has he been on the meds?

Have you got his cot elevated at all?

He is on Prevacid, 1.5ml (5mg/ml) twice daily. He started on ranitidine at two weeks old, but switched to Prevacid after we found it didn't work at about 5 weeks. His weight is good at 14 lbs 15oz. We have his crib raised to about 30 degrees, anymore and he slides down.  It might be severe gas that is bothering at this time rather than reflux, but it is difficult to tell as he spits up so frequently even during the night.  He is swaddled and bangs his feet against he crib as he tries to pass gas. When we unswaddle him, he passes gas like crazy but is awake as he is unswaddled. I usually unswaddle him briefly, reswaddle and then hold him upright. This works like a charm and he falls back asleep easily, but when I go to lay him back down he wakes up usually within a few minutes.  This problem only occurs early into the morning hours after he has been laying for hours. Naps are fine. I assume that because he has been laying on his back in one position for so many hours that this is causing his discomfort.  I am currently doing pick up/put down and have been for only 3 days, but it does NOT work at this hour, he only screams more intensely. Pick up/put down has otherwise started to work. I could attempt pick up/put down for a longer period of time at 4 am and am willing to commit to that; however, I am pretty in tune with his cries and the morning cry is one of discomfort (gas or reflux, I am not sure because he both arches and cringes).  My main concern is that I am undoing the hard work of teaching him self soothing skills by holding him, but I also want to meet his needs.

Hi there,

We've been going through exactly the same thing with our 5.5month old!  She has both reflux and a dairy/soy protein intolerance and between a bloated gassy tummy, constipation from starting solids and pain from reflux we haven't had a good nights sleep since she was born.  Then there's always the fun of teething and getting colds!

The reflux med (Losec) has certainly improved her pain in the evenings, but she does still wake at least twice a night - normally around 2-3hrs after her dream feed then again about 2-3hrs after her night feed.  Like you, I'm unable to work out what if it's the reflux causing the problem or if it's gas related to what she's eaten.

We actually found that PU/PD made her reflux worse as she got so worked up that she started to give herself "acid" hiccups.  So for the last week or so when she wakes at night we have been holding her against us until she falls asleep then try and put her down.  Occassionally it works first time, but usually it takes several attempts over about 1hr to get her back to sleep.  DH has also found that gently holding her legs flat against the mattress so they can't bounce up and down also seem sto help resettle her.

I wish I could give you some advice, but for now we're just going to focus on getting ride of the discomfort and will worry about sleep training later on.

I'll be thinking of you tonight when I'm up holding on to an upset baby!!!
Good luck
Sarah
