Tummy sleeping
« on: March 07, 2011, 19:14:58 pm »
 Can it be encouraged?

DD either cries or just gets up her elbows and looks about. I think it would help our current situation though if she would manage to fall asleep like it. She's quite a jerky/jolty baby.

The rule I've always used is if the can roll over and have great head control then it's ok.

That being said, I've always run it by my doctor. I'm quite neurotic, but I tend to follow the guidelines set out by Health Canada (back to sleep) until I'm sure it's safe.

Tummy sleep can help so many lo's do longer stretches, but needs to be used with caution.

Head control fine and she can roll from her tum back on to her back. So no worries there. It wouldn't be for nights until she did it herself, naps only.

I just dont know how to encourage it when she just wants to sit up on her elbows.

Does she put herself to sleep?  You could always rub her back until she goes to sleep but I wouldn't start AP'ing her to sleep if she self soothes.  How about rolling her onto her tummy after she's gone to sleep?

We are mid swaddle wean and its been horrendous. She normally does put herself to sleep though. I was hoping being on her tum might help her transition sleep cycles.

 Clutching at straws really....

I put Ethan to sleep on his tummy from 3 weeks as he just wouldn't sleep on his back and it made such a difference so I know where you're coming from.  It might well help her transition between sleep cycles but I wouldn't loose her ability to self soothe over it.  If you were going to try something like w2s though you could always roll her over and rub her back for a bit until she seems to be in that next sleep cycle.  How long is she napping for?

Emma, we never succeeded to swaddle.  From 3 weeks old, we found out that tummy sleeping was the only way DS would fall asleep and stay sleeping.  He had head control since birth.  We had to do it and it was very scary at first and we were checking every 15 mins if he was ok.  He's very jolting baby, he would fall asleep and jolt himself awake every time he fell asleep.  HTH

How long is she napping for?

Everything is pants. Was napping for 1.5 hours now its down to 45 mins sans swaddle. I know its just a hurdle I need to get over but i kind of need to get over it as quicky as possible! She would go to sleep herself before but now I need to either pu/pd or hold until sleepy as the day wears on and OT sets in. 1st nap she will go down on her own though but still wakes after one cycle.

I'm just in a state about it as sleep came easy before and now its so hard. We have been at the swaddle wean for over a week now. Only 3 days with both arms out but I feel like we are going back.

E went on her belly right after a horrendus week of swaddle weaning and it made a hug difference. 45 min naps stretched to 3 hrs and I really think it was the added pressure on her chest that she missewd from the swaddle kwim?

Just a little nerve wracking with all the talk of SIDS. I don't regret the choice to tummy sleep, it was just a difficult decision for me.

Did you put her on her tum on did she do it herself?

When I weaned the swaddle from B he did it himself and it was a dream.

Emma, we had the same prob with Caleb at that age, he would just push himself up onto his elbows and look around, yet I knew if he slept on his tummy it would be easier. I had to give up and leave him on his back until he was ready. it took another month but one day it just happened. hes been a fantastic tummy sleeper since.

Wish it couldve been like that since birth as he also had fantastic head control, lifted his head up to look at me when placed on my chest at birth! however it just wasnt to be for the first 6 months, not a great help I know but just letting you know that Ive BTDT :)

Hey Jo..you've changed your name to Jo!! Not 'seen' you for ages..its like bumping into a lovely, old friend!  :-* :-* :-*

So when you say you waited a month did you trhen just pop him on his tummy again or did he roll himself?

I like you just know she'll sleep better like that.

Lol! :)

well we put him in a safe T sleep because he kept rolling over onto his tummy and fighting it as whenever he woke up he would push up and cry, so we put him in that and kept him on his back for another month. One day he managed to roll over IN the Safe -T-sleep onto his tummy and stayed that way all night, so we took the Safe-T-sleep off and never looked back!

I guess I've just got to wait it out. She's lost the ability to put herself to sleep like she used ot which is worrying. Hope she gets it back once she's used to these arms being free. Its like we have gone backwards ALOT. Hefty NW's are not helping things.
