Naps when your out and about?
« on: March 28, 2011, 11:24:52 am »
Hi
I need some help i have just started the pat/shh method and i am just wondering how do you get it to work outside the house??
I have been following thw BW steps by watching for my LO to start yawning, taking him to his room, close blinds, swaddle and then pat and shhh.
What do you do when your out and about???
any help would be great
Thanks
Hannah

Usually when you are out and about LOs fall asleep with the motion of the buggy or car seat, without any help ..... What age is your LO?

ps. welcome to the forum - I found it a lifeline!

I mostly used the sling with ds2 when we were out and about as found he'd fall asleep in it quicker and usually for longer.

I second the sling although it can be strenuous to the shoulder when they get heavier. They can fall asleep in the pram but it does take longer for me at times 30 mins walk before DS finally dozes off.

I just bought a snooze shade to go over the buggy and it is the best money I ever spent DD will still do the same 2 hour nap in the buggy sometimes I have to catch her before she comes out of deep sleep too much but i just jiggle the buggy and she goes straight into another sleep cycle. I also got an app for my phone that plays white noise and if were in a really really loud place I just stick that in the buggy with her. I've found as long as there are some home comforts DD will nap just about anywhere. HTH :)

Thanks for all your replies, its nice to be able to ask some one advice!
My Lo is only 7 weeks and just refuses to sleep in the day and gets so overtired he is in a right state.
The motion of the pram doesn't seem to work he will start to yawn and then just scream!!! think he needs to learn to fall asleep on his own ?? if he does fall asleep in the pram as soon as it stops he wakes up.
the sunshades do look good may be worth a purchase.

do you use white noise? I highly recommend the slumber bear - it has a soundbox in it which I take out and every time I do windown I play the lullaby option so he recognises its nap time and hold him while swaying and humming to it for 5 mins - when he looks sleepy turn it onto womb sounds then cuddle him for a minute with it until his eyes look droopy nearly asleep then lay him in pram with soundbox next to him...he will stay more comforted...he may protest a little but stand back and wait - let him fuss for a minute just to listen and know if he needs you - a minute will feel like an hour but he may just settle!! if not then you rock the pram until he looks like hes dropping to sleep then stop before he does, if he cries again repeat...

I did this with my DS and im sooooo glad I stuck at it cos now I have a baby that will sleep in cot and buggy. the good thing with using a sleep aid like the slumber bear is that you can use it as a familiar thing at every nap wherever it may be and it will remind them its sleep time and comfort them... the slumber bear soundbox goes off again every time they cry or move so they learn to settle themselves...its just brilliant! (I use the soundbox only cos the bear is too big)...

7 weeks is just before the 8 - 12 wk mark where they start remembering things and objecting to change so start now!!
