I don't know what to do with this night feed
« on: March 28, 2011, 11:50:03 am »
Alyssa is over 7months and she went three nights with no feeds, then one began to creep back by starting at 5am.  I think this may of been my fault b/c I didn't want to start her days early so I fed her.  She then got a cold and now she is back to having one feed at night between 3-5am.  I have reduced her milk feed from 6ozs to 4ozs.  Sometimes pu/pd will work but am thinking it is genuine hunger as she goes back to sleep after she feeds.  A few times she settled herself and has gone back to sleep until 6am.  My friend has twins and she keeps telling me to let her be and she will drop her milk feed on her own.  Her twins just turned a year and they dropped there own bottle.
My concern is that she doesn't drink as much for her first bottle and I don't think she needs it as she is eating plenty of solids.

any suggestions?

Sabs-I wouldn't necessarily consider the fact that she eats enough solids to be a reason she doesn't need bottles. As you know, she will not get the nutrition and calories she needs from solids as much as from the bottles until closer to a year. That said, though, if she was handling going all night for a few nights and isn't going through a growth spurt or anything then she probably CAN handle going without feeds overnight. You can try soothing her back to sleep other ways or slowly pushing the feed later and later so it becomes combined with the morning feed and just isn't as early. Sort of depends on how comfortable YOU are with pushing it. If you think she'll drop on her own, you can just leave it be. If you decide to work on dropping it or combining it with the first morning bottle, you will likely be waking early for awhile until she adjusts and doesn't wake at that 3-5am time anymore....just so you are aware of that.

Hope this helps you decide what you'd like to do. Sorry it isn't straight forward like "You should do xyz" but it is sort of your call based on Alyssa. You know her best and know whether she really needs it or not.

Makes sense.  I have pushed this feed from 12am to 3am, so now I just have to get the courage to push it further. This morning she woke up at 4am and I should of pushed her to 5am but mommy was tired. LOL.
I am hoping she will be sleeping through the night when I go back to work(if I go back) :P

I am sure she will...or at least will be super close! (or I'll just hope that you don't have to go back ;) )
