10mth old multiple NW ?2-1Naps etc
« on: March 31, 2011, 09:12:11 am »
Hi everyone thank you for reading, I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for and I have possibly posted this in the wrong section but I feel drawn to night wakings. My 10mth old boy has slept quite well for most of his little life. Loves his daytime sleep and tries his best at night,on good night no NW a not so good night up to 4 NW however these tend to come when he's sick, teething badly etc they always have a "reason" but for the last week he has woken up 5 times minimum and not settled without me going in to comfort him for a long time (has his own room) he would just settle on his own previously. I have started to experiment with 2-1 naps and did a short morning nap long arvo, then swapped this, then went back to 2 regular naps - gave each try min of 2 days/nights to adjust but only 2 to avoid serious OT. None of these are changing anything he is still waking up the same times every night 5x. I'm a single mum and exhausted. Not sure if I should keep trying to tweak or just give up altogether. Need some advice :(

Hello :)  I have problems with NW as well, so I hear you mama!  Last night I slept in my baby's room on the floor (with several comfy blankets of course)  Here are some thoughts if you're interested...

When you go into his room, how do you sooth him back to sleep? You might be getting into a new pattern, he is getting older and wiser, and perhaps likes being rocked, held etc., or is realizing you are not there and is afraid/anxious.  Maybe you need to start the PU/PD method?

Also, have you introduced anything new to his diet? Maybe he really isn't feeling well. Or if you breastfeed, maybe it's something in your diet?

As for the 2-1 nap change..maybe this transition it is too early for him, every baby is different...many of my friends started this nap transition after 12 months. Just a thought.

Good luck and hang in there....I feel your pain...literally, every night for the last 9 months,  lol :)

Sometimes the adjustments we do to establish what's wrong unsettles them more too! Feel for you. I'm currently in bed with my 18month old beside me. Apparently she seems to like waking at 10 and will only go back to sleep next to me (grrr). Really irritating and particularly difficult to resolve as she shares a room with her 3 1/2 yr old sister.

Thank you all for your replies I am so glad to finally be able to read them! (my hard drive died and I have had to wait until it got fixed!!! argh) We are still muddling through functioning on what I call "low level" lol. Here is our rough EASY which even when we don't stick to it my lo doesnt seem to mind too much:

Wake 6am everyday on the dot!
E 7am Solids
A
S 9am/9.30am + 1 xbottle
W 11am
E 11.30 Solids
A
S 1.30/2pm 1x bottle
W 3/3.30pm
E 4pm - afternoon snack
A
S depending on wake up time at last nap either 6-7pm 1 x bottle a night
I have gone back to giving very bland + pureed foods as he was starting to refuse finger foods (teeth?) I also wanted to eliminate tummy pains. We have done so for the last 2 weeks and it hasn't changed NW :( He is teething and we medicate when its really bad but TBH my gut tells me he is waking out of habit. I will try PU/PD again but I think the habit is me going in there so Im not sure how well it will go but Ive been so pleasantly surprised before, fingers crossed x Thanks again ladies

Hi there,

So if I'm reading your EASY correctly, it looks like your first A time is 3-3.5 hours.  Then A2 is only 2.5 (after a good solid 1.5-2 hr nap?) and then A3 is 3-3.5 hours, is that right?

I wonder if LO is UT and that's why it's taking so long for him to resettle when he wakes up at night, because he's just not tired enough to go right back to sleep?

Maybe you could try extending his 2nd A time for a few days (remember to give it at least 3 days to see if it makes a difference in the NW).

What do you think?

Maria

Hi Maria, I agree with your suggestion I think his second A time is lacking and possibly I need to shift this to ensure his total S times. TBH the last two days I have been monitoring his total S times and kept them to no more than 3hrs a day total and he slept through 1 night out of the two which he hasn't done in a long time! I will try as you suggest to extend his second A time and in turn restrict his S times at both Naps and see how we go.....thank you - sometimes it just takes a different set of eyes to see :)
