Thinks PU/PD is a game! But cries if I leave
« on: April 04, 2011, 19:03:07 pm »
Hi,

My son, almost 11 months, will sometimes put himself to sleep at naps, especially if it's his first nap and especially if my husband puts him down. However, when I do the nap, I go through the routine, lay him in the crib and say 'Have a nice nap,' as when I leave the room will start shrieking. When I go back in I do PU/PD. I wait for him to pull up and my son actually starts laughing and tries to dart away from me when I try to pick him up to lay him down!

So it seems that if I'm in there I'm way too much fun but if I leave it's the end of his world! What do I do in this case? For several days I have just stayed with him until after 40 min or so of the PU/PD game he finally collapses out of exhaustion. When will he clue in and realize he doesn't need me?

OK, so if you go into the room and he stops crying immediately, chances are it wasn't a genuine cry in the first place and may have been angry yelling or a mantra cry? If you feel like you can't get out of the room, just sit on the floor. Don't engage with him, don't look at him, just sit in the doorway until he lies down. There's no point doing PD if he's not crying.

Oh! I forgot about the not crying part. Ok. So I'll stay in the room and sit on the floor. He'll probably pull up and look at me and try to engage me but I'll just ignore him. If he starts to cry, is that when I put him down?

Yeh. You only PD when he is standing AND crying his 'I need you cry'. Not yelling or whining or mantra crying.
