Does this sound like teething or something else?
« on: April 06, 2011, 08:36:54 am »
Hi all

Sorry if this is on the wrong board, feel free to move me.

DD is a week shy of 7 months and has already cut her two bottom teeth and didn't act like this so I'd thought I'd post here for some help.

Background info...
on Thursday she got her 6 month shots and has been a little off since then. We gave her tylenol off and on b/c of them over the weekend. On Monday she started to not want to nurse very much, continued yesterday. She also started waking at the 30 min mark of her naps (despite me watching her cues, in case it was an A time issue). I was able to get her back to sleep both times and she slept about an hour and 15-20 (kinda normal for her), plus her cat nap.
Last night she woke several times in the early evening (which sounds like OT, but we were really careful about getting her down early for naps and bedtime) and tonight she has woken up almost every hour since 7:30 and has cried/moaned for a few secs to mins and then gone back to sleep without us intervening. She usually STTN.
We gave her Tylenol at bedtime and at the dreamfeed at 11 and she still woke up at 2 and 3 in addition to the earlier evening.
It's 3:30 am now and I'm just waiting to see what happens in the next half hour so I can give her more Tylenol, before going back to bed.

She also had a slight fever yesteday when the meds wore off (100 F), was cranky in addition to not wanting to nurse or eat very much.

Does this sound like teething or a reaction to the shots (although that was Thursday and its now WEd. morning), or sickness? Any thoughts?  ???

TIA

Sounds like teething to me, but could also be the shots too.

Yes, yes, and yes. :P  Sounds like it could be any of the 3, and it's really hard to say which.  In the end you'll do the same thing, though, which is to give her meds when you think she needs them, APOP her if you need to, and basically help her through it.  She'll come out of it.  It won't be fun but you'll all make it. :)  Sending lots of healthy/quick teething vibes to you!

Thanks ladies.
Any idea how long it takes for a tooth to emerge when they are in this much pain? Like should I expect 2 weeks of this or would that indicate sickness instead? (I know it's hard to say, but just looking for a rough estimate). Her front bottom 2 didn't cause misery like this so I didn't really pay attention to how long it took.

Thanks again!

It really depends on the kid, unfortunately.  We've had teeth that literally take weeks-months to fully pop.  It's awful.  I do think Austin is on the slow side for teething, though.  And definitely if she's off I wouldn't hesitate to call the pedi.  They can always double check that it's not her ears or something else easy to fix.  Then if it's nothing else you can blame it on the wretched teeth! ::)
