Desperately seeking sleep
« on: April 06, 2011, 09:41:05 am »

I'm desperate...
My 4-month old had decided to wake up all night long. He grunts and kicks and just won't sleep. He doesn't cry or fuss in pain or discomfort. But sometimes he seems to wine cause he can't sleep - or so it seems. We finally had him to a point where he sleep from 10-5 but now thus has thrown us for a loop.
I'm exhausted, I'm frustrated, and I'm ready to cry.
If you want me to post his schedule (so you can have more info) let me know.
Help

Thanks Lili. I wad afraid if I made my original posting too long thst people wouldn't read it...so I obviously left out some stuff. Here ate the answers to your questions.
He is formula fed
He does (and always has) slept in his own bed in his own room.
He does have pacifiers - of all shapes and sizes...he's not a big fan of them. And unfortunately isn't great at self-soothing either :(
He isn't swaddled anymore - we use to but once he could get out on his own, we stopped...he's a big boy too.
His schedule is feed every 3-3.5 hrs with 30-45 of awake time after each feeding. Then nap. I try tstart his days around 7 or 8am - depends on when he wakes up. And I go thru to last feed of day between 7 and 8pm. With a dreamfeed around 10:30.
He doesn't STTN - and I'm desperate for him to. He was sleeping til about 5am - which was great . But for done reason thst stopped
He's a terrible napper too.
I'm feeling lost

ok. So how long is he napping inbetween  daytime feeds? His a time is counted from eyes open from nap to eyes closed for next nap. Is this somewhere close to 2 hours with a 1_1.5hr nap?

He is a terrible napper. I try to keep him up for an hour after eating and maybe i get 45-60 min of sleep til his next feed. He kicks and grunts and pulls out his pacifier. In general, he is a very restless sleeper. Could he be sleeping too much during the day? Im grasping at straws for some sort of clue to this madness :)

Hi, sorry ive not been able to get any DS or DH free time until now.....they have gone to the store for barbeque things!

The sticky below may be useful.....

As i have been thinking, you really need his A time to be getting close to 2 hours at 4 months, so that you can safely be on a 3 nap day, and then settle well at night. Its totally normal at this age for lo's to need some help transitioning between sleep cycles in the daytime, you can do this by a combination of shhpat (if it still works) or pu/pd.

So you still want to feed on waking, but you really shouldnt need to feed more often than every 3.5 hours at this age. Have you changed to amount of formula recently? does he need to step up an oz in each bottle? how much are you feeding each time? And are you feeding through the night? if so at what times? And the main question:

Does he settle back to sleep nicely and quickly once he is fed?

Is he a sicky baby? is there any cahnce something could be upsetting his little tummy when he is trying to sleep?
