Ds climbed out of his cot. Does he need a BBB ?
« on: April 07, 2011, 11:06:49 am »
Hi ladies, ds climbed out of the cot last night. I was on a night shift so I didn't see it but dh said it was all very smooth and there was no big noise at all. Apparently he just climbed out and walked into our room asking to be picked up??? Does he need to move to a BBB? Tbh I don't think he is ready for a BBB but I don't want him to get hurt. What to do ?

Hi

Usually from a safety point of view, once LO's can figure out how to climb out of their cots then moving to a BBB is recommended.

How old is he?

Does he have a baby sleeping bag or just have covers over him?

If you feel it's a one off then you could try him back in his cots agin tonight to see if it happens again (maybe put something like a mattress etc on the floor in case he gets out again so he doesn't hurt himself).

Hi Sian, he is only 19 months. How do I know he is not going to do it again? I'm worrying that next time he will hurt himself. He moves around in the cot during the night. That's why I think he is not ready  for a BBB yet? We started with a pillow few weeks ago to try and teach him to sleep in one spot. But he is not 100% with it though.

If he's not in a baby sleeping bag, can you put him in one? My DD is still in one & she's nearly 3 (also still in a cotbed) & FX she's never tried to get out. She also moves around loads when she sleeps & ends up in the most bizarre positions!!

The below link might help with a bit more info....

Can you drop his mattress any lower so he can't get out?

I would def try a gro-bag like Sian suggests. DS is still in his and it prevents him climbing out.

Thanks for the link Sian I will have a look when I get home. Unfortunately Grobag is not a option as Ds hates it :-( . Mattress is at its lowest.

They do make something called a crib tent.

I'm not sure if you'd feel comfortable using it ( and I have no personal experience with one), but I've heard great things about it for kids who are young and climbing out of a crib.

Finn and Miguel are so much alike.  Finn does not like grobags either. 'No like it!' lol  I tried one in England, I bought it ages ago, it's a toddler one and I now have to sell it because he doesn't like it.

I like the crib tent idea, that's cool.

Grants, with the way things have gone with M's sleep AND given that he's not finished teeth, I'd really do what you can to keep him in there.  If there is no option you will have to set up his room with very minimal distractions, remove anything unsafe and try a gate at the door.  In fact, I'd get a gate stat.
The tweaking never stops!

I agree Wendy. I don’t really want a BBB yet. He is just too young.  He didn’t try to climb out  last night (Maybe because he STTN!!!Yeah!! :)) .I think he will forget about it for awhile. We are going to continue to close the gates upstairs just in case.

I couldn’t find the cot-tent in the UK (the link is from Amazon US). I will wait and see and if he tries to climb out again I might have to look harder for the cot- tent.

Thank you ladies for all the support in info! It is all very helpful. :)
