2 Year Old Ready to Drop Nap?
« on: April 13, 2011, 14:58:18 pm »
Good morning;

I have a daughter who is 2 years and 5 months old as of yesterday. Since she was about 2 years old, if not before that even, every night we put her to bed (which is at 7:30 p.m.), she stays awake in her crib talking and singing, playing with her blankets, sometimes undressing herself and just having a good old time until about 10:00 p.m. at night. She is not crying or screaming (except when she is first put to bed as she hates initially going), but is definitely awake until at least this time.

Her schedule is the following:

Awake around 7:30 a.m.
Breakfast 8:00 a.m.
Snack 10:30 a.m.
Lunch 12-12:30 p.m.
Nap 1:00-1:30 to 3:00 p.m. (we usually have to go in and wake her up or she would sleep until 3:30-4:00p.m.)
Snack usually when she gets up or shortly after
Dinner 5:30-6:00 p.m.
Snack (sometimes) 6:45 p.m.
Bedtime routine starts at 7:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. if it's a bath night (i.e. pajamas on, brush teeth, read books)
By the time this is done, Bedtime 7:30 p.m.

We have found when she has not had a nap (this does not happen often), she will tend to fall asleep quite quickly with no problems and have a better time going to bed as well and still sleep through the night.

She has never really had a problem sleeping through the night since she was 1 year old and usually sleeps right through without waking. The odd time, she may wake up, but is easy to settle again when she does.

My question is - may she be ready to cut out her nap altogether even though she's this young since she's staying up so late every night?

She is still in a crib as we are very reluctant to move her to a big bed since she is awake for so long and we know she would be constantly getting out of bed if she was able to.

My husband wants to remove the nap, but I think it's too early since she's so young.

Any advice/insight would be appreciated!
Thank you very much!
Tracey

A lot of us with LOs around her age are finding that we have had to severely cut the nap to get a decent bedtime and therefore decent length of night time sleep. Cutting completely leaves them overtired and so a lot of us are doing a combo of some nap days and some no nap days OR a short nap (this is a relative amount based on your LO and what they need) every day that we wake them from.

I was starting to think that's exactly what we were going to have to do. She's not overly cranky or anything (of course she has her moments! lol), but I was afraid of dropping so early. I don't mind her not napping as her 4 year old brother is not napping anymore anyway, but he didn't drop until he was over 3 years old. The few times she's gone without, she did get a little crankier than usual towards evening, but went to sleep almost instantly when put down.

I will definitely join you in that thread - thanks!!

When my oldest was 2.5 I purposely dropped the nap so I could get her bedtime back in line with her baby sister (7 pm)...now this may not be what happens with most kids, but it went fine, we had a "rest time" watching a movie or playing quiet games while her sister napped and I really don't remember her getting badly OT (though that may be my mommy brain glossing over reality, but I don't think so!)

With my youngest we are going the slower route, but only because it gives Masyn and I some time together.  For the most part she naps 20 min a day, or just "rests" and gets on fine.
