Are bad nights starting to mess with our good days?
« on: April 15, 2011, 10:59:40 am »
DS is 6 months on 3 solid meals per day and 4 hourly feeds with a DF. He generally wakes once or twice per night and needs to feed to go back to sleep. I don't feed him all the way to sleep just until I can tell he is relaxed which I know I am probably going to have to tackle soon, but he has just recovered from an ear infection and the antibiotics seem to have left him really gassy so I wanted to let him get back to normal first. We weaned his paci as it was affecting his night sleep but he is a scratcher so I usually put him to bed with gloves on his hands so cant thumb suck. He is rolling but has started to sleep on his side. He chews all day long but I cant see any new teeth and his first two didnt seem to bother him too much.

Usually in the day he settles for naps really well... rarely any crying and decent 1.5-2 hour naps. I have heard him wake and then resettle himself too. I was hoping that the skills he seems to have in the day would cross over to night time too ... but today he cried and fussed before going down for his pm nap and then only slept for 45 mins and then again at BT. He may have been a bit OT and I dont want to jump the gun but I just wondered if anyone LO had done a similar thing.... ie have their nighttime issues start to affect the day times if left unchecked. Am I just going to have to suck it up and fight the night snacks??!

thanks

There is a growth spurt at 6  months, so he could just be hungry.  Is he FF or BF?  What is his routine like during the day?

breast fed- i usually have a few days pre and during AF when I feel like my supply is much lower so I am still feeding him when he wakes. He is doing roughly 3 hours A time with 2 x 1.5 hour naps (sometimes 2 if he woke early) and we try to keep his days around the 12/ 12.5 hr mark.
It is possible that his increased mobility is a big factor too as he was at the bottom of his crib facing the opposite way and on his tummy when he woke this morning. We will give it a few more days and try to keep AP to a minimum and see how things go. He has a runny nose and DH has been sick all week so not going to start any major battles yet.

so just put him down for am nap after 3 hrs A time and he was up 45 mins later but didnt resettle. Do you think I need to try and push his a time? He seemed to be getting fussy which has always been a cue that he is tired. I just with there werent so many variables!!

Can you post your routine in EAS format?

Is he just six months or almost 7?  Early 6 months, a 3 hour A for the 1st nap, would be quite long.  It could give you an OT nap.  Also, if he isn't feeling well, you may get a short nap for that as well.

I think I actually got his wake up time wrong and put him down too early. Second nap he slept for 2 hours and went to sleep with no fuss - just smiled, turned his head and nodded off. I gave him a catnap so that he could make it to bed time but we clashed with a walk to the store so we got a bit of an OT mess but he did go down eventually. He went to bed a little later than usual so not ideal but no crying (hopefully havent jinxed myself !!).
Will see how things go over the next few days. Hopefully his tummy will recover from the antibiotics and he wont be so gassy. I may try and find some probiotics to help with that.

He is almost 7 months old and was 1 week overdue so has always been a little ahead of the curve for A times. He has been on 3  hours for a couple of weeks and was having great naps and no notable signs of being OT.

Todays easy was all over the place cos of the short first nap but will hopefully improve tomorrow. If not I will post whatever EASY we end up with :)

Sorry - I didn't see your ticker at the bottom. :-[  OK, then 3 hours A is perfect.  Keep in mind the first A of the day is normally the shortest.

Probiotics should help.  We normally start them while on antibiotics and the week after.
